Excellent video. And this video doesn't even take into account the cognitive ability of our youth, which limits their ability to simultaneously process all the inputs required for 11v11 play.
That would have been much harder to simulate, except perhaps to put 33 people on each team. There was certainly room for them ;-)
Oh, and they should have used a size 6 or size 7 ball.

I loved the way the guy said that some of his team mates were so far away he couldn't really see them or what they were doing, lol! What a great perspective! Thanks for sharing SoccerMom!

The one thing most people haven't talked about in that SOCAL document are the changes go beyond birth year.
- U8 would play on the U6 size field - 4v4 at U8 no goalies, etc.

There will be no more U-anything...

They label their age groups as U-18 or U16, etc. Same concept will apply if they made the change next year. For 2016/2017 U10 will would be 2006, U9 would be 2007. Moving the date four months will not do away with the label. Maybe 15 years from now people may call it something different but not anytime soon.

Not at our club for rec or pre/junior academy - they play 6v6.

Right...sorry...i mean in relation to trying to translate the current U system to the new Calendar year system...i typed too fast before thinking that through...I am assuming guidelines will be reformulated to be what USSF considers to be age appropriate...but who knows...Actually, "U" will make greater intuitive sense now with change to Calendar year...

they should switch to age ranges when discussing the curriculum and remove the "u" all together

oh, one last thing, I know its u6-u8, but you would think to keep in line with the spirit of odd numbers, the u6 to u8s would be 3v3 then 5v5

If they were going to change the packaging, USSF would simply change the U label to the actual birth year...and then they would have to update it annually...but that does kind of reduce the continuity of being able to compare, for instance, the performance of a previous U14 team to a current U14 team...

Actually, "U" will make greater intuitive sense now with change to Calendar year... I agree. Now all I have to do is think, "What age will he/she turn this calendar year?" and add 1. For example, if you will be 13 in December this year, then you are U14 under the new system.

It is what age are you on December 31st + 1.
If I read your post correctly, if your daughter is currently 12 and turns 13 in December of this year she would have played U13 in 2015. Same concept as before, take the age the one day prior to the switch (December 31st) and add one.

If your daughter turns 13 in December 2015, then she is U14 for the 2015/2016 season in the new system. She is "under 14 for the entire calendar year 2015".

They are switching entirely to Birth Year team designations. Not sure if any other states are doing this.
