How far should you have to drive for a single u8-u11 academy game on a Saturday or Sunday?
Should a club have teams on their u8-u11 academy schedule and have folks travel 60 miles for a single game?

I think it depends on where you live. If you live in the Atlanta metro area, 60 miles is excessive. If you are more rural, you will have to travel more to get different competition, which I think is healthy.

Many of the big clubs will only play big clubs for academy. It's likely for ease of scheduling. If they have ages w 4 or 5 teams they want a club who can provide games for all those teams. Small clubs may have 1 or 2 per age. Mathematically it doesn't work. You may travel further if you are a small club. This has been our experience.

Always hated those long drives at the early age groups, but it happens often especially with smaller clubs. Not saying it should though.
I'm a Cobb resident. Think about north or west Cobb County (NASA, SSA, YMCA, Cherokee) to UFA (Fowler). Easily 50 miles. I remember an academy game scheduled there a few years back at 8 AM...one game. Our coach (or game scheduler) was able to get two additional games scheduled that afternoon in Norcross so while it was a long day, definitely made the drive more bearable by playing 3 games. Macon and Athens were two others that I vividly recall for one game.
The smaller, outlying clubs, have probably got it so much worse than most people realize. If you can't field more than one or two teams in an age group, seems to make it tough to schedule the "big clubs" much less get multiple games against them. Think about Rome to UFC, GFC to SSA, NW YMCA to Concord South...all probably 50+ mile drives for parents.
