OK, here's a question. I know of a team that recently racked up three yellow cards in a weekend. They were for Delay of Restart. I plan to ask the parent the next time I see them, but in the interim does any one know what this usually is? Slow to get back from half? Not getting the ball back to midfield quick enough after a goal? Purposely kicking the ball out of bounds? Two games, both ending up as ties.

From askasoccerreferee.com Delaying the restart of play Referees must caution players who delay the restart of play by tactics such as: * taking a free kick from the wrong position with the sole intention of forcing the referee to order a retake * appearing to take a throw-in but suddenly leaving it to one of his teammates to take * kicking the ball away or carrying it away with the hands after the referee has stopped play * excessively delaying the taking of a throw-in or free kick * delaying leaving the field of play when being substituted * provoking a confrontation by deliberately touching the ball after the referee has stopped play www.askasoccerreferee.com/?p=2288

We played a team a while back that had a yellow for that reason delay of restart. The player, after mouthing off at the ref for a possession call, purposely kicked the ball downfield so our team had to run retrieve it. The referee had already dealt with this girl and her attitude by cautioning her about it multiple times before he threw the card - I figured the card would have been for dissent but it was for delay of restart when I looked it up.
Thing is, technically after he cautioned her the third time for her backtalking, it should have been a red but the paperwork for red cards is ridiculous for referees and he probably didn't want to deal with the obnoxious coach who kept yelling at him too. Wonder where that player learned to backtalk? Coach or mom - based on the sidelines that game.
Seriously folks, it's youth soccer - sit down and shut up already! You're teaching your kids to be complete brats
