U.S. Soccer sues USWNT's union to prevent possible strike as Rio nearsThe anger level over the use of artificial turf fields at the Women's World Cup and other international friendlies was high, but it is only one issue that the women want addressed in a new agreement with U.S. Soccer. The labor strife also comes as the NWSL is about the enter its fourth season — unprecedented in women's soccer history in the U.S. The status of national team players in the NWSL is another sticking point in the negotiations. Each player has the right to refuse to play in the league, according to Nichols, while U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati contends all players must play in NWSL as part of their contracts with the federation. www.foxsports.com/soccer/story/us-soccer-files-lawsuit-united-states-womens-national-team-uswnt-players-association-020316

Does the USSF really care about the players on the USMNT and USWNT? Or will they do whatever they can to squeeze them? The very hiring of Latham & Watkins, the highest grossing law firm in the world, with a (perhaps unfounded) reputation for "aggressive" tactics (this can be a good thing I suppose if they are on your side), although there are certainly court filings to support this view (I am not saying I have this view; but it does not take long to do a little research), makes one wonder about the USSF motives. Why not just do what is right by the players? Why go to all this trouble? Why not spend the money on the players rather than on hiring a ridiculously expensive international law firm? What could possibly be so bad about treating your most prized asset (the USWNT) fairly (not that they are much better with the USMNT although they do pay them a lot more and never have them play on turf, although having them play on those stupid temporary grass fields is pretty ridiculous)? Well, did I say that we should wonder whether USSF cares about their players? Did they perhaps hire the most powerful law firm in the world to bring their employees to heel? Do we really believe that the USWNT players' private contact information was left on the court filings by accident? Hmmm. Maybe, I suppose. But I would say this piece of reporting falls under the general heading of "and the plot sickens": USWNT responds to USSF suit
and then there is this: How the USSF treats its National teamsThis is the organization we would want to be in control of our daughters if they did indeed start a DAP for girls? It does make one wonder.

If there is a strike, kiss the league goodbye.
