glen showed passion, she did not. Her answers were kind of bla bla and she didn't answer some of his questions etc.
Girls DA ---
Winning world cup is the gift that keeps giving. This is team worth marketing and building our brand around. Winning is precarious at international level and the game of soccer. Extremely excited what’s happening with women soccer, and the DA is a byproduct of that.
Criteria for an application – we have a boys application process, US soccer has a good selection in criteria, will launch may 1st for a month -criteria No high school soccer or outside competition - We will run the leagues identically, the criteria will be the same. Lets put on a nationwide league, very tied into national team, very difficult with the geography. The geography will have a say in how the league forms. These players will be on college track, specifically division level 1 and national team track. The league will be good environment for these players.
Glen brings up high school and emphasizes his background as a high school coach and the previous greats all played high school – should have this been looked at more closely and how this effects young women? April – we assume boys are girls are different, and I’m not sure they are….. yes there is a social, community component, its important to parents. High school is equally important to boys and girls. If high school is a priority then play high school, if your goal set and focus is div 1 and national team, then play in the GDA
Boys DA is 18 rostered for an event and with substitution rules, she would be in favor of 3 sub rule, and 1 game a weekend, but in this country we would play 2 games a weekend, and there would be 6 or 7 subs allowed. How many events will GDA play – glen says as a college coach, I’ll have limited opportunities to see players because of limited events. The best of the best will play in the league, with regional competitions.
You are trying to convince clubs and players to apply and join academy - are you going to have to hit the recruiting the trail in a different manner. Are you planning on sitting with clubs you want? I think we will do club visits, not every club, we will do visits to help them develop the structure, and provide them support and the philosophy and style of play. We have a lot of good relationships with a lot of good clubs. Will be a good partnerships.
15 new staff members for US womens soccer – league administration, and help run showcases etc. 8 to 10 technical people will need to be hired. Those who understand player development and put a program in place. These folks would be regionalized and liaisons and work closely with the clubs. 5 years ago it was 2 full time people – jill ellis and her. She went on how these hires would be a mix of people with various skillsets related to soccer. The administrative people will be hired first.
Will you involve/bring back former us women players the foudy’s chastains etc --- we do recruit former US national players to be involved, and bring them in so they understand what its like to be involved on the other side. We have 8 former players helping with the u14s right now, going back decades. We do want to encourage, mentor them and get them in a environment where they can practice the trade. To work with US program, you need to work at it as your daily trade.
Coaching has change quickly and its become much harder for former players to just step in and coach. You have to work with players over time. Coaching licenses are important.
What if some top clubs elect not to join? I have a good feel for the clubs that will apply and those that have already expressed interest by the way they have communicated. The first year, might not be all, but by year 2 or 3, we will have the best clubs. We have to make room for the 2nd tier also and will. Even with ODP, we have a reasonability to monitor all players.
Are we forcing too much structure? For example make the 4th day of training a play day, ie street soccer etc. (what we’ve lacked on the boys side). Fantastic idea, and I fully support it. You need to have structure given the size of this country, and a vision and mission. Jill and I wrote the vision 6 years ago. You need to incorporate creativity flexibility and personality with every team we train. The u14s tomorrow will have 30 minutes of self play, they will be asked to each create their own 30 minutes session with what ever they want. Or they can go over in the corner and play 3v3. We are trying to train them to how to train themselves.
Game about passion and different coaches offer that in different ways, and you have had in issue with coaching behavior on sidelines. You want your coaches to be like jill, sit. I think of guy like Pep and he is up the entire match shouting instructions etc. Each coach has a different style and different way of pushing their players. Are you sapping the personality out of a coach. April – I don’t think so glen, if we filmed all these coaches, we wouldn’t be as good role models as jill ellis was. She was remarkable role model, its impressive how she conducted herself, we need to turn to her. Passion encouragement enthusiasm is always going to be included. April I’m not in the entertainment business, we have spun out of control with our behavior on the sidelines, that its numbing, we want players to make mistakes and feel free to make them. Develop and make your own decisions. A little bit of guidance but don’t dominate from the sidelines…

On the one hand, she sounded either totally disconnected from the world or maybe just not the sharpest tool in the shed. On the other hand, she might be sharp as a tack and thinks we are all idiots and the masses will do whatever she says because she is the USSF. She may be right, but she may be insufficiently appreciating that soccer families are tough consumers.
She did say that the substitution rule would be less restrictive than feared, so that was helpful. She also believes that the best clubs will be in the league after a few years. She did not want to say the acronym ECNL, and she did not use the term even though Crooks asked her directly. Crooks did ask her about coaching behavior, and she wants coaches to be like Jill Ellis in demeanor. Fair enough I suppose. No mention of cost to the players even though it was clear that a large part of their budget will go to hiring 10-15 new staff!!
She says: GDAP will be for players on YNT and D1 college tracks and intimated that if you are not in the GDAP you are not on these tracks (although she is sure there will be some D2 and D3 players in their league also! Does she have any idea how many D1 scholarships are available every year? Way more than could possibly play in her league), it will be the best league in the USA for girls 14-19 (we will see about this I suppose; she says it will be right under college soccer in the hierarchy so she sees college soccer as an important part of the development model; does she know we already have a league doing a pretty good job of that?), it could also be called the Youth National Team League (!!; and how many players in her league will actually get those opportunities? 2% at most?), boys and girls are just not that different so the leagues can be run essentially the same (!!; good golly), they will have a set of experts called "birth year experts" (!!!; sound Orwellian to anyone else?). I got nothing else informative from the interview. Maybe other listeners extracted more information.

She is on Crooks' Show again today at 1pm (Sirius XM FC). If she was illuminating as last time it will be another hour of my life wasted!
