Don't know about Academy but for the 2004 Tryouts we probably had 250-300 just for that age group for 7 or 8 teams for rising U13.
The top team coach picks their team and has to wait for parents to accept, any players not offered a spot on the top team then gets an offer on the second team if they choose to accept. The process is typically delayed because families wait a few days to accept a spot or not. Teams below have difficulty offering spots until the teams above are filled.

250 2004s!!! That is unreal.
I tell people all the time - the level of competition in this city is insane.

Between the mandate, the TH/NASA merger and the fact the typically U14'is the age kids make the most moves between clubs, I am not surprised.
This week's tryout numbers will be interesting too. Expect large numbers everywhere first night -- and multiple tryouts

However ... What would a typical tryout number have been fr the age group if the two clubs were still two clubs? 150 each? I could see that being a possibility .

250-300??? Holy crap. That is an army of kids for one age group....how the heck do you assess that many kids at one time? That is a crazy number.

From the TH/NASA website, they have ten teams listed for the U17's (2000's). TEN! If that's accurate and all players return from last year plus those doing multiple tryouts, you will see at least 250+ on the first night. That's unreal!

Those numbers are accurate, they are expecting to field ten teams. Also to respond to the poster above it is my understanding that a SSA R3PL is folding pretty much, the entire team is looking elsewhere.

They will probably lose 3/4 of their team. It's a shame. Regarding the numbers, how in the world can you evaluate the sheer amount of girls? Two clubs merging two different age groups and a lot of new players. What do your coaches look for? Is it like some clubs where they will just throw girls out into full sized scrimmages or does tophat evaluate tryouts differently? My uninformed assumption is that the top 2/3 squads are pretty close to being set in each age group (minus a couple of new girls that might show) But how are you going to set the balance of teams, especially with such a change to your geographic footprint. I wish I could attend just to see how the tryouts will be managed! Tophat has always been a well oiled machine....

It's not that difficult really to manage that many kids, we have multiple fields/games set up, each field has several coaches assessing the players. If players are dominating their field we bump them up a field and conversely move players down a field if they are clearly over matched.
The biggest challenge is identifying the middle third of the players which is about 60-70% of your entire pool. The top third players are easy to identify as are the bottom third. It's the middle third that proves the most difficult, I had 40-50 players on my field that were fairly similar all we pretty good but no one stood out of the pack, it's very hard. Then you go by intangibles, positions, etc. It's not a perfect science but we try to do the best we can.

That's what most parents can't understand. Just curious, when you mention intangibles, what do you look for? Good luck to all still going through tryouts though!

My daughter was at this tryout. There was a lot of girls there. I dont know if it was 200 plus though. Most of the girls that came to tryouts also came to pretryout camp so the NasaTopHat coaches were able to get several looks at the girls. Either way I think alot of girls ended the day not on a top as the club is only fielding 7 teams at the 2004 age group.
