Went to lunch today with a friend who is a big basketball fan. Had the Sweden game on the TVs. I asked if he had seen any soccer and he recounted a few of the matches he had seen pieces of. Certainly was a high water mark listening to a typical US sports fan recount ANYTHING about a soccer game on TV. Especially when the US isn't playing?!?

I think the US will struggle against Ecuador tomorrow. If Ecuador plays the way they have been, it will be a tough one for the US to win. Even with Brooks holding up the back line (my man!), I predict either 3-1 or 3-2 Ecuador. We shall see....But here is what we are looking at:
Ecuador team has great ball movement Ecuador has speed US has speed, but, as usual, lacks creativity US has workhorses, but lack creativity Ecuador has workhorses too...
It should be interesting. Viva Soccer!

At full strength, for first, half, USMNT were pretty clearly the better side last night, and they were willing to work harder than Ecuador. Both of those things are impressive and promising. Everything changed at 10v10 obviously. Bradley needs to stop giving the ball away in dangerous places. Brooks was again pretty good. A couple of near disasters, but he was under assault. Deuce is still a difference maker, including tracking back on defense. Klinsmann waited too long to use his subs. Bedoya needed to come off way way sooner. Jones red card and Bedoya yellow were both attributable to Bedoya being gassed. It was so obvious from my sofa. Of course, lots of things are crystal clear from my sofa.
By the way, on the 10v10 front, maybe FIFA should go to the hockey-type rules for Extra Time. Man do things open up when you take off 2 players. For first 15 minutes, go 10v10, for next 15 go 9v9. Or some such. I am predicting that would eliminate, or nearly eliminate, penalty shootouts as means of deciding matches.
Oh, and one more thing, Donovan did a pretty good job in the booth.

I think Ecuador may have underestimated the tenacity and vigor the USMNT displayed. Because even when they were down, the way those boys (ahem!) stroked the ball…there was a certain confidence in their stroking. It was as if they felt they could come back, like they had previously. It was only towards the end, when it dawned on them that they were losing, that they upped the intensity. Stroking gave way to pounding, thumping on at that door of that net. I mean, how many chances did Valencia have? 3? 4? The one that Brooks (my man!) cleared off the line…?!
They turned it on too late. I mean they poured out that energy. If they had played like that after it went down to 10v10, they may have prevailed.
The USMT will face Argentina, assuming Arg. wins. This is good for the tournament to have this continued interest and support. Kudos to them to the USMNT for doing what they had to do to win. Plus, lady luck was on their side; she tired of the Ecuadorians stroke stroking! She said you know what? I'm gunning for the big tenacious guns.

By the way, during the broadcast last night, I was thinking these slow motion replays are dumb. They keep showing them over real game action. We end up missing at least a minute each time. And there is obviously something interesting happening because the crowd are going crazy while we are watching this repay over and over. I was thinking FOX is even worse than I thought. Then there was this nearly endless loop of replays of the Cameron tackle on E Valencia in the box. How many times did they show that tackle? Could have been a penalty. Would have been harsh, but still could have been called. Commentators kept letting it go like they were no longer interested in seeing that replay. Then I started thinking why do they keep showing this over and over? Then I started thinking maybe this feed is not from FOX. Would a FOX producer keep showing that replay over and over? Is the tournament in charge of feed? Was this some South American producer who wanted it to be clear that USMNT got away with one? Does anyone know who is in charge of the feed?

I watch the games on Univision Deportes...I like the commentary better. As far as the feed being the same, not sure

Does anyone know who is in charge of the feed? Whoever has the Copa America rights handles the marketing, handles the feed. It is handled by one company. I believe it may be a Brazilian or Colombian company. Yes, I think the reason for replaying that foul was to point out that it could have been a penalty.

Argentina destroyed Venezuela, who came in on a roll. Stopped them cold.. on a totally different level. I'm hoping USA gets off to a good start Tuesday and has some luck. They'll need a TON of luck. Anything can happen but ARG is deeeeep and they never waste possession like USA does when pressure comes.
...fun to watch quality South American soccer.

USMNT need KM of GA Rush to be competitive What a strange post. I don't believe KM is eligible for US citizenship at this time. There are many other US players that could and should get the opportunity first in my opinion. Also he was only at GA Rush for 1 season, so it is very hard to claim he is a product of this organisation.

Don't even think KM was at GA Rush for a season. Just State Cup one year. Pretty sure post is from same guy that posts the GA Rush KM nonsense constantly on the other forum.

I don't think so, I think WC has more importance as you are typically playing against the best teams. Some teams in CA don't always send their best players, especially with the Olympics right around the corner.

Is this the biggest US game in the modern era tonight? It is only the biggest game if they EITHER win OR get beat 7-0.

Is this the biggest US game in the modern era tonight? Yes I would have to say that outside of the World Cup, this is the USMT's biggest test to date. Consider that this is the first time the USMNT is taking on a top ten team in some time, well other than the game against Colombia. Today, they are playing a team that is ranked where they would want to be. Meaning, they want to be among the best of the best. They don't want to be just another middle-range team. They want to be a Germany, a Spain, an Argentina. Tonight, the USMNT will undergo their biggest test in soccer outside of playing in the WC without a doubt! Yes. The test will determine where they go from here. They are taking on arguably the best player in the world. Granted, some might consider this match and tournament watered down, perhaps because it is being hosted in the US (for financial reasons). However, the Copa America is the oldest tournament in the world. This is their 100 anniversary (don't think there is an older tournament). At the end of the day, the take-away will be that the USMNT and Klinsman will go back to the drawing board and determine what skills and talent they need to acquire, to shape the future of men's soccer in the US. Without doubt, the USMNT will give it a go, with heart. Care should be taken though; when you look at what Chile did to Mexico (considered a technically balanced team, heretofore), man! It is all good, for the further development of this beloved sport. Viva mpira!

With due respect, in 2009 the USMNT played in the Confederations Cup and managed to squeak through their group even though having lost badly to Italy and Brazil by virtue of beating Egypt 3-0 on the final group stage match day. Then in the Semifinals they played unquestionably the #1 team in the world at the time, Spain, and I would have to say beat them handily 2-0. Watching the match I remember thinking the USMNT can play with the big boys. They did not look out of place even though Spain looked like Spain. Then in the Final they went up 2-0 on Brazil before eventually losing 3-2 when Brazil was Brazil rather than being the shell of their former selves that they are today. I would say those were the biggest matches the USMNT have played in recent memory outside of the World Cup process. This game against Argentina in a tournament concocted by a bunch of criminals (I think it might be true that every person primarily responsible for organizing this year's Copa America is either in jail, has been indicted, or is awaiting extradition) does not really rate that highly for me. I am glad they get to play it, though, and I will be happy to watch them try to contain Argentina's attacking talent.
