Not sure if I want to go there as team manager of U17 boys (have enough on my plate), but wondering if anyone highly recommends pregame and halftime snacks/food to boost energy, avoid cramping, etc.

That's awfully kind of you to think about snacks for the team. My kid plays U17 and hasn't had team-organized snacks (used to be orange slices) in about 3 years so I don't think you need to feel compelled to have people take turns bringing snacks. That said, the orange slices always went eaten. Nowadays, the kids bring granola or protein bars if they want them for the car ride home, but even that might not be necessary.
