Not the first time we have addressed this issue here, but this weekend's latest shenanigans certainly deserve highlighting. Perhaps this kind of blatant cheating has been perpetrated by generations of association footballers. Perhaps old timers who had the privilege of seeing quality European or South American football before TV coverage including instant replay was available and prominent in all corners of the globe can comment. Regardless of its history, this type of cheating really needs to be addressed in the most direct and harshest possible way. I heard some Big Blue Heads on The Football Show this morning try to describe this as a 50/50 call. I think Bleacher Report covers the incident nicely. I hope Mourinho is embarrassed the day after for backing his player. As we have discussed before, coaches could do wonders for this problem by calling out their players and realizing their little bundles of joy are not perfect human beings (as Mourinho had implied in an interview just a few days before this incident): “If, because of diving, a football result directly is affected, I think the player should be punished. But I don’t need to speak to my players because they don’t dive." Right Jose, right. He is special all right.

you have to start implementing post game punishments. fining is probably not enough, like the nba flop rule.
the biggest problem i have is, when you go watch a u8 game now, you see little kids doing the same thing.

Every single high-level professional club has at least one or two players who will cheat like this. It will never stop if it keeps working.

the biggest problem i have is, when you go watch a u8 game now, you see little kids doing the same thing. This past weekend my U12 daughter was in the middle of a Zidane turn (we obviously don't call it a Maradona in our house), when she had her off leg chopped from behind throwing her off balance so she could not complete the skill. No call by the Referee. I asked her if she learned anything from the incident, expecting her to say something like "I should complete the rotation faster". But no, she says: "Yea. I should have fallen down and grabbed my face!" Just great.

Yep....that's how my oldest daughter reacted when I took her to a Silverbacks game. Asked her what she learned and she said "I learned that when you get tripped or stumble, you animatedly fall to the ground and hold something." Great. LOL

I have learned from this post that the kids are actually paying attention to the professional games.

The Referee is the Sheriff on the field. On field discipline boils down to the ref. he/she has to take charge immediately. If the player dives and the ref does not call it a dive the players will continue to dive. The refs are empowered. Are they intimidated? The theatre of dreams is famous for a reason. And is another reason why Mourinho is undefeated at The bridge. Bottom line big clubs do get the calls occasionally. Sports politics same thing. Certain people always get the benefit of the doubt. Sheriffs are human too. It's unfortunate. Minimizing the discrepancy is key. The World Cup qualifier for 2010 - France and Ireland - three blatant calls. Two handballs by Henry and an offside by Galas within ten seconds. No calls. What happens galas scores a goal France goes to the World Cup Ireland is knocked out. But as karma had it France had a disastrous World Cup.

Only post-game challenges and suspensions will solve the diving problem in soccer.

It appears this referee may get some extra time to think about his decision making. I like it. I hope it is without pay. I assume these guys get evaluated and then get assignments that determine their salaries and prominence. Now if they would just do something to the players.

I have not been here in a while. But I have to get in on this one like zizou said we have addressed this before. But this isssue boils my defensive blood. My team is Man U. and I wish Ashley Young would have gotten sent off for that BS he got away with in that CL. match. I even heard he was getting called out by his teamates and coach. That is what needs to be happening if these pansie referees dont start pulling cards instead of telling these cheaters to get up! Players need to not tolerate anyone doing it. IMO Barca made this behavior acceptable and rewarding simply because they practiced it and got very good at it. More players then said heck if you cant beat em join um. It has got to the point where I cant stand to watch Barca play because I know, if it is a tight game, what they will resort to. Im sorry I am rambling but Chelsea was given a gift that 3 points should be taken away. We have to bring pride and honor back to this game or it will continue to be seen as a joke here. Good blog about this worth a read
