If MLS came to ATL, would it fail downtown?
hockey should have been played out of gwinnett arena, where all the hockey players are -- north

I would think Gwinnett is the best location. Ticket prices would need to be reasonable for us blue collar people and discounts and Special nights would be helpful as well. I can't think of another area around Atlanta that could support an MLS team. I am an hour from Gwinnett but if we are going to have a team that is where to have it. Some might say Kennesaw but I can't see us providing the support it would take to keep an MLS franchise. Would love to have them but Gwinnett and its large population makes more sense.

I have to admit.... I am in north Gwinnett area and probably wouldn't drive downtown more than a couple of times a season. But, if it the team played within 30 minutes of me, I would probably go all that I could afford to go.

If an MLS team is to have any success in Atlanta, it will need to win the support of the Hispanic community here. The Silverbacks have started down that path, and are having pretty good attendance using that strategy.
Downtown Atlanta? I can't imagine a much worse place to have it.

I agree with the above with keeping it in the Northern 'burbs, but it's a done deal that they would play out of the new stadium, correct? Similar to what the Sounders do.

GM plant up near 85/285 would be a great spot.

Downtown isn't optimal but the Braves do OK with what has to be some of the worst traffic and transit planning imaginable and I think they are by and large a suburban fan base. I can only imagine what they might draw in a perfect world with a stadium sitting somewhere in the 400 to Norcross top end with easy access to Marietta, North Fulton, and Gwinnett.
My big fear for MLS soccer is that it has to go head to head with college football in the fall and even the established Atlanta pro teams have a hard time with that. It would be good if Blank could get a USMNT player or two or perhaps pick off a European with some star power to build a campaign around. He's very good at marketing. When he bought the Falcons, he was very nearly giving away tickets in order to fill the seats to avoid blackouts and build interest and that worked very well. He's not going to be able to just sit on his hands and expect soccer to work but I think he's savvy enough to know and address that.

I'd love to see them play at Gwinnett Arena but I'd have to agree with soccerdad1 that they are probably pretty much locked into playing at the new stadium downtown. Having them play at Gwinnett Arena would probably hurt the Atlanta Silverbacks a bit as they are beginning to gain some traction as far as growing their fan base. Was at the Silverbacks game last Saturday and the crowd was estimated at 3,700. The Lady Silverbacks draw much fewer fans but they still put on a great show and the after match meet and greets for the men and women are wonderful for the kids.

I don't live on the northside and I'm sure if the MLS team were to play in Gwinnett I would go to far less games than at the new stadium downtown. In any case as it was pointed out, if we get an MLS team, it will belong to Arthur Blank and it will play in the new stadium.

Based on personal observation from Mexico vs. Trinidad Gold Cup quarter-finals this past July... The market exists here and in the neighboring States considering we had a record crowd of 54,229 in attendance at that game in July.
Agree with toepoke poster, get a USMNT player, but definitely a Mexican National Team player or two to target Hispanic market. It would be nice to have a Seattle or Portland like sized crowd in attendance locally.

GM plant up near 85/285 would be a great spot. Agreed. Easy access in and out off the interstates. Large area that really needs something to replace the plant. Already has two Marta stations with Doraville and Chamblee.

new stadium and its impact could greatly change the landscape of soccer in the ATL.
first thing is atlanta needs to get an mls franchise. then, if atlanta gets one, who do they affiliate with. it would be foolish to turn your back on one of the current DA "alliances/clubs".
From what i hear, there is not enough talent in this city to support a 3rd DA.

I'd respect a local MLS team more if it was the Silverbacks.. After winning a couple NASL titles, gaining more support, like others have done before them. Strong clubs are grown, not bought.

Having a top local player like KM or WZ would not hurt. KM would love to come home since he lives in Milton and his brand of soccer may be the most exciting in MLS.
