Hey all. How are we feeling about tryouts this week? More or less stressful than club tryouts?

Well, we're in Gwinnett where we have that somewhat different situation where you have a few clubs slotting kids into 20+ high schools. Our high school for the first time may make cuts this year, on the girls side. It's certainly an interesting dynamic. You may have a girl on a club's top team not make her high school team because that school is really good while a girl on the club's third team makes their high school team because that school is...not as good.

At my kids' school it's probably most stressful for players who were sophomores on JV last year and for freshmen. The coaches don't tend to take juniors on JV so it's varsity or nothing. Kids who were on varsity last year are pretty much guaranteed a spot on varsity this year so that leaves just a handful of decisions to make for varsity. Some JV players were brought up at the end of last year so those are the most likely players added to varsity although there could always be someone who is new to the school or improved a lot since last year.
The boys coaches make a lot of cuts because there's always a big turnout. The girls coaches end up making some cuts but they prefer to take a bigger roster rather than turn someone away who is a decent player.
I wonder how DA will affect high school soccer this year. I'd heard that the Parkview state champion team was heavily affected by seniors graduating (7?) and players playing DA (maybe 5?). That's going to hurt. Fortunately our school didn't graduate many players so it should be a good season!

My daughter gets equally nervous for any tryout, although she has never been cut. I think she is more nervous about HS tryouts, as she is trying to make varsity as a freshman. The team has 12 returning seniors this year. Good Luck to all…

Our players went well. They play for the social aspect as it is a step or two below club. They look forward to a fun season.
What is everyone's opinion on DA not allowing high school vs. other clubs and players playing R3PL, NL, ODP?

In order to move the conversation forward, here are a few questions about how your school typically handles tryouts.
How many days are scheduled? Do you have two a days? Did you start on MLK day? Do they make cuts everyday or do they wait till the end? Once the team is posted, do you immediately go into practice the following day? Do they conduct fitness testing? How much do they scrimmage? Are boys and girls separate, meaning different fields or times?

So far there were only 2 days scheduled for tryouts. Monday was boys, today is girls. I am guessing depending on the size of the pool if there will be cuts or additional days added.Last year they started practice the week after announcing. Boys and girls varsity was on the same pitch last year for practice at the same time. All coaches help coach the teams.

And it may be helpful to post the level of the school, in relation to these questions. I.e. "State finalist in Class 7A" or "mid-level 3A".
I have heard a top level team having 2 a days all week, where the other poster mentioned only one day this week with practice starting next week.

I'll answer my own survey:
3 official tryout days, Tues, Wed Thurs no, just one 2 hr session per day yes, an unofficial field day on Mon cuts are announced at the end (although I imagine some obvious cuts may be told earlier) practice starts Friday Boys did fitness testing at a local sports performance gym So far, mostly scrimmaging Fairly separate, same field but different times
This is for a lower level Class 7A school

Started yesterday, once a day, for three days They will make cuts at the end Once the roster is announced, they will start practice on Friday Everyone did conditioning last week The girls and boys are separate (same time) On the girls side they separated the 8th & 9th graders (Yes 8th graders) for JV squad. Upper class evaluated for varsity. And they are moved back and forth. The Varsity girls are only looking to fill 3 spots (12 Seniors). My daughter (Freshman) got called over to Varsity in the last 5 min. yesterday. We will see how it goes today. 8AAAAA 2nd round

Official tryout days listed as Mon-Wed I think. But, doubtful there are enough girls to have cuts. Only yesterday, otherwise 3:45 - 6 each day Yes, girls were there from 9 - 4 yesterday, sort of a mini "camp" No cuts made that I know of. Last year girls were told if the coaches didn't expect them to get much playing time. They can then choose or not to participate knowing they won't get field time. They are encouraged to stay and practice to get better. We will have a JV team this year though for any that don't get much Varsity playing time. Practice starts as soon as the teams are set. Fitness testing done last week during conditioning - 3 tests: run 4 miles < 36 minutes, run predetermined route on bleachers for 30 minutes without stopping, 100 yard sprints (25 secs down, 35 secs back) for 12 repetitions Not sure? Separate but at the same time. One uses playing field, other uses practice field, they alternate week to week. Class 3A school, sweet 16 last year

Didn't add the part of what kind of school: large 7A, both teams went to playoffs. boys state champions in 2015. Didn't hear about a fitness test, but there is an expected time for mile run. There was not any mandatory conditioning.

7A school - not sure of last years standings? but i think they ended up 3rd in the region? they lost 2 games only -One day of tryouts was scheduled - which was yesterday but they told them that a list would go up today and those on it were expected to come back today. some of the other schools in our our county did start on MLK -They cut 3 girls from the first day (about 37 tried out) and will cut 3 more tonight. There was twice that many boys and a lot of cuts. -They were told they would take 16 varsity and 15 jv for the girls, not sure on the boys side but probably around the same -Not sure of when practices begin, was told there would be a meeting on Monday with info, but first game is scheduled for 2/2 -They had a week of non-mandatory conditioning, and there is a 2 mile run test -Girls were first and then the boys - Both boys and girls varsity have the same 2 coaches..JV has different coaches for boys and girls
