Lot of discussion about high school vs DA. But I have a question about ODP. GDA tryouts are June sometime, right? Once you sign with a DA team, are you immediately on the hook about not participating in other competitions? What about ODP Regionals in July?

The 2003s were new to DA last year, current u13 group. I think there were 40 kids that played ODP that landed on a DA roster. I don't recall how many went to regional camp, but many did just to enjoy the experience. They were told before hand that none of the DA kids would get selected to play in the mixed games for the evening sessions, but that turned out not to be the case, and many if not most of the DA kids were picked to play in those games and ended up making the region pool (even though they would no longer be playing odp etc).

I can't speak for GDA since it is new this fall, but for the boys, many of the boys on the ODP team for the 2004s played organized soccer in the summer. I believe DA does not "own" you till August 1st. However, I would not advertise :-)

Both are good options. However DA limits other soccer options like high school. Our player was not interested in DA because of the exclusivity it requires. He's played ODP R3pl and NL. I encourage players not wanting to commit only to DA to consider these other high level options including the clubs who are starting ECNL programs. As I said all are good options. Just know what you are getting into with each.

Once you sign with a DA team, are you immediately on the hook about not participating in other competitions? What about ODP Regionals in July? You can play GDA and still attend ODP Regionals in July. This year 2002's and up only take 1 team to Regionals, thats around 20 kids each team. 2003 and below, all kids are welcome. The tricky part will be this -- 2002 teams and up who win at Regionals, get a chance to represent their state in the ODP Nationals in AZ next year. If some of the kids are in DA will they be allowed to the attend the National event? I have heard that they plan on making that request to US Soccer since its a national event but who knows if they will make an exception?

ODP coaches were sent the following today in part
What if my child makes a girls or boys DA team this summer?
Your child is still eligible to go to region camp since the DA doesn’t officially start their season until after region camp. But DA players who make the regional Pool or regional team will not be eligible to participate in the region team events later in the year since US Soccer does not allow DA players to participate in other programs. We believe that Region Camp will be a good experience for your child but if you decline the invite because your child made the DA program, we will understand and will refund your camp fee. Since you will be required to make payments for region camp before you might know whether your child will play DA, we will refund the camp fees if your child joins a DA team and pulls out of region camp by June 16.
Our 2002 ODP Boys probably lost more to DA this year than any other age group.
