Weather not ideal and fields are getting saturated. Crossing fingers that the tournaments are held as planned.

As surprising as it seems, the Allen Creek fields have continued to be open according to the LSA website. That is where one daughter's team is playing. Maybe the rain has stayed south of Gainesville. That being said, forecast looks troubling over next few days, and colder and wet on weekend will be unpleasant if tourneys do get played as planned. Or maybe all games will be decided by kicks from the spot. Tourney over in under an hour!

will be interesting for sure. of all the fields they are using, the pinckneyville fields are probably the worst with water. field 4 and 5 usually have a tough time absorbing all the rain.
they will do what ever they can to play. its spread out across 15+ venues, so hopefully they all get in. my gut is they play on saturday, fields get destroyed and its supposed to rain more, then no games on sunday.

I can't see either tournament happening. It's rained all week with 60% chance today, 50% tomorrow, 60% on Saturday and 70% on Sunday. Even if it doesn't rain, the fields won't dry out in time and with that many venues for both tournaments, moving to another field that may not be saturated isn't a logistical possibility unless they move to turf -and even then, not enough turf fields are available unless the tournament committees are working the phones right now to use some high school fields for older age groups 11v11. Youngers may just be cancelled - hard to get 6v6/8v8 on a turf field.
Hate it for the teams entered - it's always a disappointment when the playeres work toward a tournament and it gets rained out. But I'm ever grateful our team isn't in a post season tournament here now - hate losing the $$$ and this 50% refund crap clubs do is highway robbery!

Does anyone know how much revenue tourneys like these typically provide for a club?

Does anyone know how much revenue tourneys like these typically provide for a club? Your kid's team will be lucky to get 50%. I've never read the GSA or Nike Cup paperwork. In reality, a lot of teams don't get anything. The tournament organizers and club managers and coaches have such high turnover, no one remembers to ask for or give a credit. My kid's team lost out at the beginning of 2012 season at the season-opening tournament down by the Atlanta airport when the tournament was rained out. The tournament organizers said they'd credit the team about 50% for the next year, but the team didn't play that tournament this year, and got nothing. I know GSA is very touchy about their turf. They basically killed 75% of their fields 2 years ago due to turf-negligence, re-sodded, and almost killed that due to poor installation and more turf negligence. They are lucky they have any grass at all, and are prone to cancel if they figure on any possible damage to the turf. I figure the latest they can go before making the play/no-play decision is Friday afternoon around 4pm or so. If they do it Saturday, that would just suck.

from nike cup: We have received many inquiries about the Norcross Nike Cup tournament status. It has been raining all week in the Atlanta area and all the participating venues have been closed. We will make a decision on the status of the tournament at noon on Friday based on weather forecasts and field conditions. Our goal is to provide a safe environment and quality tournament to all involved. Unfortunately, we cannot control the weather nor the closing of the participating venues. Thank you for your understanding. Norcross Nike Cup

From GSA on Wednesday:
Teams we are watching the weather closely. All venues are currently open for play this weekend. I know many of you are looking for information. We will work hard to provide information as it becomes available.
The tournament weather hotline number and the home page of the web-site will be the best way to get information out quickly. You will also get a text message updates for all teams that are signed up in SIC.
The weather hotline # is 770-925-4106. Ext: 101
Please look for another weather update tomorrow evening.

Regarding my question about revenue, I was curious about how much the host club makes on a large tournament rather than how much would be refunded. Any idea? Even refunding 50% is probably a big hit to their budget for the year.
I can't see how they'll get these tournaments in. We were at the GSA fields for Triumph Cup and they actually looked pretty good. However with all the rain we've had they'd be torn up pretty quickly.

The AFC/AFU Challenge Cup Tournament that was cancelled earlier in the fall because of rain, our team was received a 80% refund from the clubs. I hope the Nike Cup Tournament is not cancelled due to rain as well, but it does not look like it will happen. As a previous poster stated, some maybe played and some may because of location and rainfall.
If they are planning to cancel it is best to inform all teams sooner rather than later, as there are some that are traveling far and have made accommodations. It is a no win for anyone and just bad luck for tournaments this fall season.

yes, its a big revenue generator. but the smart clubs bye insurance, nike cup is 560 teams, so they bought insurance, the only hit is the cost of the insurance.

From the Norcross Tournament website - Information Tab then look on Rules:
Now most tournaments will put this in their offical legalese rules but usually there's a 50% refund as courtesy. Clubs don't want to tick off teams - then no one will come to their tournament. Personally I think keeping 50% of the fees for something that never happened is wrong but it's been this way forever. What costs does a club incur prior to the tournament other than buying the insurance and medals - most of the time the tee-shirts are made on site now and you dont' pay refs until after they do a game so what are the 'start up' costs for tournaments and what justification is there to keep any more money than to recoup what was spent prior to the event?
