I just find it interesting that 2 of the greatest players in their prospective sports were passed on throughout their youth and or college/nfl experiences as not being highly regarded.
I know I've brought this same thing up in the past, but does soccer allow for this late maturation process? In a world of heavy analytics, these guys violated the accepted norm and didn't have all the measurables. Maybe its a rare phenomenon, but just crazy that the 2 are on top of their sports (Curry is currently with James, Durant etc).
Imagine the NBA without Curry, the NFL without Brady.....
Curry wasn't considered physical enough to play for a high level hoops program, and even his fathers Alma mater wouldn't offer him a scholarship. He didn't pass the eye test. Fortunately for us, and the NBA, college hoops has the ncaa tournament for an opportunity for lesser known players to dazzle the world and show their competitive drive. "The other knock on Curry was that he lacked the speed, size and athleticism to keep up with opposing point guards." Even though, everyone who watched him play knew he could shoot the lights out.
And this is from Brady's mouth about how he was scouted at the NFL combine - "Poor build, Skinny, Lacks great physical stature and strength, Lacks mobility and ability to avoid the rush, Lacks a really strong arm, Can’t drive the ball downfield, Does not throw a really tight spiral, System-type player who can get exposed if forced to ad lib, Gets knocked down easily"

You can still say a lot of those same things about Brady even today, but he make up for it in "spades" when it comes to the intangible traits and I guess some of that can be credited to his maturation process.

Lots of folks can learn many traits used in sports. Technically sound, high sports IQ, etc. The two things you can't teach are Heart and Drive. They are the two intangibles that separate the great ones. This is similar to the Money Ball formula the Oakland A's used for years to finagle their way into the upper echelon of Baseball amongst the big money spenders like the Yankees and Dodgers. Everyone else was using the standard metrics and stats. Oakland created their own with the help of a math guy to see beyond the stat sheet.

you know me -- always have to bring it up, but man, Curry put on a show last night. Not his greatest performance points wise, but huge buckets when needed. add to that 12 boards.
and lets remind folks -- no major schools wanted him out of high school.....nobody.....His dad's Alma mater wouldn't even offer him a scholarship.
obviously still dozens slip through the cracks, but we need stop anointing soccer players great at 12-16 and ignoring the 18-23 year olds who actually need time to grow and mature.
I know so many players given zero chance at ages 15+ -- very very good players. Often for various reasons, quiet parents, not talking to coaches, coach had zero relationship with coach on higher teams etc. Kids often were just fine playing where they were at also, but they deserved better. I'd often speak up on their behalf because someone had to.....
