As a player I’ve seen and experienced near catastrophic injuries on the pitch. Thankfully as a parent and a spectator, I’ve only seen bad cuts, sprains and maybe the occasional missed punch, but never a break. That changed this weekend. Injured player has control of the ball and pushes it up to make a move/pass. The defending player chooses to come in full speed with spikes exposed and land on the portion of the leg between the knee and the ankle.
Needless to say, there was a loud pop (broken bone), the knee portion of his leg bent in an unnatural manner, a gut wrenching scream and yelling as the injured kid writhes in pain on the pitch along with all the feelings of doom we as parents know is possible but dread. Referee gave a straight red.
With tibia bone almost protruding out of his skin and for the grace of professional trainers on hand, they were able to get to him immediately. This was not my kid but I and everyone else at the fields felt for this kid and his parents. Both parents where thankfully at his side within minutes or even seconds of this happening. The trainers immediately called for fire/rescue who transported him to the hospital.
The game was immediately suspended. Now, while all of this was going on, the carded kid was on the bench sobbing. The rest of the carded kid’s teammates at the behest of their captain showed some real class and got the team together in line to take a knee almost like an honor guard. Clapped for him as he was carted off. On the other hand, there was a player who was NOT involved in the fracas but had been aggressive all game, who refused to partake and instead chose to pace on the field like a caged animal chomping at the opportunity to get back in the fight. His Captain, teammates and I believe one member of his coaching staff tried to dissuade him from his actions and the optics. He wasn’t having it.
Current update(Sunday Nite) - his leg is still swollen, it’s currently in a cast with a definite tibia break. Preliminary doctor’s diagnosis is he’ll be out 6 weeks and then PT. Praying no ligaments/tendons are damaged and he can make a full recovery with no lingering effects.
