As we approach tryouts, we are faced with the scenario of where and when to tryout.
We are trying out at our current club. There will be a lot more team movement this year at the age level and new coaches. Her existing coach is there to provide feedback to prospective coaches and we have a general sense of one of two teams she would likely make. Will not be top team, hoping and will try hard for the second which is still a very competitive team.
She would like to look at a new team. We do not know any of the coaches, players, etc. So it will be a true first look. We will attend a pre-tryout clinic but no guarantee that her future coach would even see her there.
So the question is - when to go to each club. I was planning the first two days at the current club with the new club on the third day. The rationale is to try to see if she can make the preferred team at existing club on the first or second night. If she is not with the the preferred team by then, we have a general idea she will not make that team. Then go to the new club on the last night just so they can get a look and have a feel where she would fit in with the new club.
Thoughts and feedback? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

The third tryout night is a waste. Rosters are 99% set by night two. You must contact the director or coach at the new club and make a sales pitch, ask questions and try to stand out. They need to know who your child is BEFORE tryouts ever start. At tryouts wear something that stands out. Don’t look like the other kids. Bright shoes or socks, headband or jersey of a pro athlete with that famous name on the back. So what if they yell “Neymar” or “Salah “ at you kid. Just get some attention some how.

Definitely reach out to the other clubs now. Honestly if your current club doenst already know where your kid is going to be placed then they’re wasting your time. Talk to the preferred teams coach now and see what they say. It just drives me nuts that so many clubs aren’t loyal to their players and let players know where they stand before tryouts. Depending on how helpful your current club is with information then I’d plan on going to the new Tuesday night, and then back to the old club Wednesday. Rosters aren’t always set by Thursday nights especially with new coaches.

Different coaches see different things in players and choose accordingly. Especially in a year when you will be going to have a new coach I don't think an existing coach can be definitive. They can only day where they will recommend your child to be. I agree that the last night isn't always set. We had a girl from our team last year go to a top level (Athena A) team on the last night at tryouts despite being rejected from the Athena B team at our club. It can happen. Mostly though I agree to try the new club on the first or second night is best.

Those kids are the ones who get the last minute spots a lot of the times.

I've found envelopes full of $50 bills to very helpful in securing top team spots. Or promises to lease the coach a car or transfer frequent flier miles. Not that something like that has ever happened.

Not always true- I've seen some good kids show up on the last night, that's the night most people shop around. Especially if coaches aren't honest to their players about where they stand and blindside the kid on the second night to tell them they don't have a spot on the team for next year.

Pre-tryout camps or combines are a must if trying to "break into a new club". ESPECIALLY if you are at what I call the bridging age. Teams that go from 7v7 to 9v9 and 9v9 to 11v11.
I have heard it recommended by several
DAY ONE OF TRYOUTS at the CLUB THE PLAYER MOST WANTS TO ATTEND. IF A NEW PLAYER ASK THE COACH FOR FEEDBACK. They should say she is a good fit for the team or the club or they understand if you need or want to tryout someplace else tomorrow.
DAY TWO OF TRYOUTS at the SAFETY CLUB (the one they are currently at or that based on precamp and competition level the player should safely have a spot)
DAY THREE depends on how day 1 and 2 went.
Good Luck
It's a jungle out there :-)

Thanks for all of the help everyone.
Does anyone know of a good way to get a honest and realistic idea about a prospective new coach at a new club? I don't know anyone at the club so I am at a loss.

Thanks for all of the help everyone. Does anyone know of a good way to get a honest and realistic idea about a prospective new coach at a new club? I don't know anyone at the club so I am at a loss. I would say the best idea is to put it on the forum. The club will give you glowing feedback. The past parents coached by him/her will give you the best feedback. Is the coach currently coaching at State Cup? Do you know the teams he/she previously coached?
