Hopefully Mark Geiger is taking notes. Blow the whistle decisively and keep the game moving.

I'm no Geiger fan but that Colombia-England game was a very difficult game for him to ref. Colombia had no interest in playing soccer. As I read in a thread on a referee board, the game can't be any better than the players are willing to let it be, ultimately. Had Geiger done what most people say he should (namely card everyone in sight) he'd have been criticized even more by fans and pundits, and more importantly, by FIFA who apparently issued instructions to the refs to try to keep the players in the tournament. This effectively handcuffs the refs in showing cards, ESPECIALLY for "trivial" offenses like dissent.
Definitely a rock and a hard place situation for Geiger.
Still hope he never refs another ATLUTD game though.

I thought Geiger was fine in that match. Although he had every right to send off a few players.
As for this Russia-Croatia match, the lack of top level technical ability on the Russia team is shocking.

Geiger seems to end up being a topic of discussion whenever he works. That’s not a good thing.
The ENG COL game was definitely a tough assignment. I was surprised .. but in agreement when he gave yellow (again) for the second weak head-butt.

This blog has been very interesting to read during the WC. Instead of following teams, referees are being followed. Commentary from around the world: law5-theref.blogspot.com/
