What are your take aways about the make up of the best teams in the world cup thus far? Can it be applied to youth teams?

if you don't have a strong midfield *cough*argentina*cough* you won't get very far.
also, rolling around doesn't win games.

Most of the teams have soccer players vs athletes for sure. very few players besides mbappe have pace that is on another level compared to the rest of the players.
the little guys are playing well -- Hazard, Griezmann and Modrić (even Mbappe is listed at 5'10)
You can see the fatique settle in on the players that have played many minutes - long long grind.
Todays game was entertaining as heck though

I love the World Cup. I hate that USA isn’t a world power in the game.

My take is you need more than athletes to factor, especially in the later rounds. You need midfielders that can play box to box. That is the new requirement for top soccer teams. You need team cohesion and by all means you need someone who values scoring more than life. You need a coach that can adapt his team to counteract their opponent and who knows how to set up a team to win. You can't just put your best 11 and hope they find a way. Finally, you need players with heart. This is after-all the World Cup. Blood/Sweat/Tears, you have your whole nation behind you, give it your all and leave nothing behind.
On a personal note, I feel a little bit of the shine on Messi rubbed off for me this WC and that brightness of CR7 shone a bit more. I had always preferred Messi, but Ronaldo showed me how one player, regardless of the other 10, can put a team on his back and will them to win. Didn't think it would last but was impressed with his play against Espana. Messi on the other hand looked like he wanted to be anywhere else but on the pitch for Argentina.

My takeways are: 1. Good to elite footskill is necessary 2. #1 + Athletic midfields are the (France's midfield is dominating) 3. #1 + #2 + #3 + Being able to change tactics to match opponent or take advantage of opponent weaknesses 4. #1 + #2 + #3 + #4 Set Pieces execution.

Apparently Southgate studied NBA and NFL teams and how they block to create space. Watch England's set pieces and they're essentially running a basketball pick & roll. NO idea why nobody thought to do that before.

I think most people overlooked France. Absolutely amazing in the last 2 games

Defense and set plays are key

Everyone needs to play South American style football. Foul, foul, foul. Refs are not going to throw reds (or double yellows).
The days of the beautiful game are over. Just hack until the ref starts throwing cards. IMO Croatia got away with it well.

wish youth coaches would work on set pieces and throw ins more..... Why do you wish youth coaches would work on set pieces more? Yes, this World Cup seemed to have lots of games changed by set pieces, but I am not sure most youth levels would benefit from set pieces. Maybe u16 and above would.

France seemed to win different ways in the last several games. Against Argentina it was the counter. Against another team it was the set piece. Today France was flatiut better all over the field. One thing that stands out about Mbappe is he seems to finish his chances at a high rate. I think that was a different maker in the knockout rounds.

Biggest takeaway was the youth talent everyone else had while compared to the US. The US is a good 30 years from having a top notch team that can compete.

Basically it’s 1986 again, the last year we also didn’t qualify for the World Cup. The federation is banking on the current u20s to carry the Torch for the future.

04gparent, I'll have to disagree. I think Croatia was the better overall team. Croatia had more possession, more shots. They were very dominate for long stretches. France's first half goals were very lucky (own goal and penalty). A couple good finishes in the 2nd half, but they were a bit fortunate on those as well (rebound of Pogbas shot came right back to him, keeper seemed pretty off balance on Mbappes shot as well). But of course in soccer the best team doesnt always win.

Lucky goals? Four of them? Yes Croatia did possess and that is great, but ultimately you have to put the ball in the back of the net. I think France didnt lead in possession in any of their knockout stage wins. So it may have been part of their strategy to defend and counter attack... On Mbappe's goal (if you watch the replay) you will see the goalie is leaning one way because he had to guard against Mbappe shooting into the far corner. So for him to shoot near post with accuracy and power is what makes it even better. The tactical debates are fun!!!!

I agree that Croatia outplayed France in the first half, but I do think that was France's strategy. Croatia was the boxer out there punching constantly and trying to score points. France was the boxer which played defense and waited for the perfect counter punch opportunities. The first goal is key in these matches. If Croatia could have found a way to score first, I think it would have been a different result. I heard someone criticize the French manager by saying that the French team is like a Porsche that does the speed limit. No question France is very talented and could have likely gone blow for blow with Croatia in a possession game. All said, I like how Croatia played the game and I wished France did not get "rewarded" for laying back and playing counter attack football the first half. Great to see different tactics/strategy.
