How common are mid day practices at clubs during the summer? For example, for team camps, getting ready for post season, etc. I know this is becoming the norm for tryouts (DA, ECNL) but also feels like it’s becoming an expectation of players on higher teams in recent years. I’m not so sure I’m ok with. Coaches appear to have a lot more flexibility than some parents on getting their player to a practice, for example, Wednesday morning at say 10:00. Thoughts?

Think its pretty normal. Always want to try and stay ahead of the game. Its optional, but I understand that it may give other players an advantage. ie. more time with coach etc.. or at least seem that way. The struggle is real

Optional? Not always.

Really depends on the coach but every one we did in the summer was always optional. Some families still out of town etc.. Now preseason camp is not optional. (unless approved by coach)
I would recommend talking to coach. He/She should be able to work with you.

atv I know exactly what you mean. My family is made up of two working parents and trying to get our player to practice midday is definitely a struggle for us. We moved clubs this year and we don't even know anyone on the new team to set up carpool so its definitely a struggle!

Of course but these are the types of expectations (IMO) that should be communicated prior to tryouts. Especially with a new coach. I personally feel so strongly about this that we would have considered changing clubs where my player was a “lock” before.

I like it. Gets the kids out of the house and on a ball. To me it shows the coaches care about my kids development. It’s amazing to me how many people don’t show up for optional training sessions

Our mandatory team camp to kick off the season is coming up... my kids have the time slots of 8-10am and 10.30-12.30. Good thing we don't have jobs or anything.

Atlanta United Academy does something pretty cool. They have an optional player development program (club only). A player will receive individually designed extra training from 1-1.5 hrs and then work on training grounds until practice starts. The training is to help players work on weaknesses.
Its between 2-3 days a week 2pm start 6:00 (goalkeepers) 7:00 practice (last year)
