And he’s 100% correct. How many clubs in GA have DA or ECNL? There are two clubs that have ECNL in S.C. with no DA clubs. Most big D1 programs only recruit at the da/ECNL level so chances of a kid from S.C. getting recruited to an out of state power school slim to none. If your kid lives on the coast, it’s 2-4 hrs to drive to either of the ECNL teams so you’re even worse. The fix? Mitigate the power struggle and mandate a top league based on promotion and relegation based on that teams performance against other state teams. Use state cup and some in state tournaments to decide who earns the right to play out of state. Freeze rosters so that teams that promote to play out of state can’t cherry pick from other clubs and put the onus on clubs that teach and develop players as opposed to big clubs that pay their way into DA or ECNL. Each year the leagues reset and all teams play for out of state comp. when you start basing your team on talent as opposed to money making and favorites and performance starts to impact your bottom line you will see change. The other thing that will be impacted is college recruiters will now have to travel far and wide to see individual talent which they should be doing anyways,

Jones knows his family, and their situation, better than anyone else. When he played youth soccer, the culture was different. Maybe he is correct, or maybe his parents would have adjusted things to make it possible to play 60 miles away from his home. It is easy to say what we would do in a given situation until we are in that same situation.
Players can still be discovered if these players do not play at the highest levels. They can attend ID camps at colleges, can play ODP, which does get one the opportunity for being seen by other coaches. It is not as easy, yet it is possible, and players (and parents) must extend more effort.
Chuck-your scenario of a top pro/rel league is intriguing to me. What do you think it would take to implement something like you suggest?

Chuck is right.
What he described is what RPL and NPL DID with the top teams from the states earning their way upward (or down).
Then new opportunities came along and stepped over that system... and it changed. ECNL and DA have fantastic players but a segregated youth pyramid is just like single entity pro soccer. Compromised.

One of the most capped players in USMNT history did not receive a single D1 offer out of high school and walked on at UCLA.
