Not sure if this has already been talked about, I was told about this and thought I would share. This is separate from the NC Champions League - NC Champions League: www.championsleaguenc.com/ This is for rising U11s to introduce and get them ready for the level of play at the DA level prior to actually playing in the Development Academy. It is a collaborative effort between the major clubs in NC/SC(9 so far). This reminds me of a Preemptive Georgia Soccer collaboration. Good that they were able to put their own interests aside and collectively come together and get this going. Makes everyone better at getting good developmental games and an earlier age. carolinadevelopmentleague.com/

All those clubs have a DA program. So basically the kids will never play a team from other really, really good smaller clubs in NC because they were excluded from this deal. NC did something similar a few years ago with teams exclusively playing each other over and over for an entire year. The parents and kids hated it because there was no "flavor" to it, just the same ole teams with the same or worse scores at the end of the season but the CDL is even more choking in my opinion because you only have 6 total clubs participating. This was a power move by the biggest club in NC to try to make parents go ahead and move their kids at 9 years old to these clubs only. Yes, I said 9 because the 9 and 10 year olds are roped into this also. This wasn't about putting "their own interests aside" this was about putting only these 6 clubs interests to the forefront and to hell with everybody else. Because we all know we can tell at 9 years old who the next Messi is so everybody else should be excluded. Sorry to be so frank Futsal Gawdess but I'm just trying to be honest.

Yea, that state is full of the mega clubs only saving grace is Charlotte has competition from within. At Fusion there youth academy program is a glorified rec program. They would just play "in house" games over and over and over again.
Greensboro and Winston merged entirely for Fusion (it used to be just for DA and ecnl) - now their entire youth programs are merged. Then Raleigh is just NCFC - options are extremely limited.
Yes there are some pockets of smaller clubs thrown in, but there mega clubs probably also have major county and city support for fields (Bryon park etc, BB&T etc)

I'm confused. A soccer team is still 15-22 players, right? And each club only gets max 1 DA spot? I don't get the move to merge and create exclusivity. In doing so you actually limit opportunities for advancement for the kids.
In NC, I see 4 ECNL and 2 DA clubs (girls side).

I guess you can say to make 1 stronger unified team. Not sure why triangle merged with CASL at the time, but i'm sure the writing was on the wall for Triangle FC. when they merged they created the NCFC brand. They had 2 DA teams that then become 1 stronger team. ( i don't recall if TFCA had all the age groups though or just the younger ones)
Fusion was always a combined effort of Greensboro United and Winston, it wasn't until recently they decided to merge entirely. It is possible that Greensboro United used to have DA alone, but not totally sure. A few years ago many of the clubs offered subsidized DA programs, where the parents would pay for example $1800 total -- which included registration fees, travel fees, uniforms, and food etc. Was a great deal. The only way you could fund this was being a mega club.

But having "the strongest DA team"...I mean what's the point? Isn't the entire point of the DA to funnel the best players to the US NT's? Other than that, its just seems like misguided prestige. Because all it takes is one MLS club to come in and fully fund a DA and basically blow everyone else out of the water.

I guess your striking a fine balance of how many teams can you really have in an area while maintaining a competitive balance.
Correct if a new fully funded DA program "rolled" into town it would change the landscape for sure. For example imagine if KSA or any other club was able to get DA and figure out how to fully or partially fund it? There were rumors of a few older kids jumping to concorde this year simply because they were being told they could play for free. There are other sides of the story obviously, but you get the point.
Its hard to tell what is the best answer for how many DA clubs this city can support. Its clear at the younger age group, there are many competitive teams and we will see how that equates to 'success' at the older age groups. But yes, the more kids being looked at and evaluated the better. Bottom line though, if you ain't at Atlanta United your still second fiddle in the US National teams mind.

Frank discussions/opinions backed by logic are always welcomed. Didn't realize that was part of the back story. Thanks for sharing, these types of insight help put things in perspective. So they are worse than the shady nonsense that go on with mega-club mergers in Metro Atlanta. Like some have already been saying in this post, I don't understand the race to get rid of all the other clubs to create some type of monopoly. I've said it before and i'll say it again, money will be the demise of the sport. I've called for US Soccer to quit trying to subsidize all the other minor inconsequential items they waste money on. Subsidize or eliminate the cost of travel. I think the Federation should be responsible for all travel related costs. I bet you, more meaningful games occur, a smarter more balanced travel schedule would also emerge. They could cut their costs by having it sponsored or giving the naming rights to a brand or two. I think this would balance things out in the DA world drastically. Now clubs, families and players would be allowed to focus mainly on playing the beautiful game.
