Haven’t seen the final roster for either kid - but think it’s 18 & 18

I also think it matters on the league and substitution rule. If your talking DA, ECNL and SCCL I think 15-16 in my opinion is great. The reason I say 15 or 16 is based on your preference for 1 or 2 goalies

To me the number depends upon the quality of depth your team has. Better to have 16 than 17 if #17 is a huge drop off. Also how versatile are your subs, can they play different positions?
Seems to me a good breakdown would be to have:
2 Strikers 3 Forwards 4 midfielders 3 center backs 3 outside backs 2 goal keepers
Would possibly have a 18th player that could play multiple positions. One or two injuries could change the dynamics quickly.
We had 14 position players last year and in the SCCL Cup had one player injured and 1 player sick for last 2 weeks. Plus one player had to miss a game. We wound up having to have our second goal keeper play the field for parts of a game.

I used to be a big opponent to 18 kids on a team, but looking at it now depending on the team you may have 1-2 kids not be able to be there any given game. You may also have 1-2 injuries normally that might keep a player out for an extended amount of time. If the coach is unwilling to guest pass much or if he is at a smaller club where the ability to guest pass is limited to begin with, I think 18 is fine with 2 keepers that don't see any or much field time.
To be honest the most useful touches on the ball is during training which is probably 5-6x the touches they get on the field in any given game anyway. I also think in a lot of teams playing time averages out over time in a Fall/Spring season of at least 20 games plus tournaments. Sure one kid may only get 20 minutes one game but he may play 40-50 minutes the next one. I think it evens out over time unless the coach just really dislikes your kid, and if that is the case maybe it is time to look for a new club anyway.

6 defenders is a lot. Pretty common for defenders to not sub for a whole game. 5/5/5 +1/2 goal keepers (so 16 or 17, one of the keepers should be a combo/field player if possible).

General rule of thumb is that you want half the number of field players as subs plus a goalie. So for 11 v. 11, you want 10 + 5 + 1. You do a disservice to goalies by having a sub. Goalies need to play as much as possible. Really should let goalies play for multiple teams.

From the poll, it looks like there are a large number of teams fielding 18 or more on a single roster. In general, how is playing time split? Just curious. Our squads usually field 15 to 16 players so don’t have any experience here.

Totally agree on goalies,my daughter is a u15 keeper and has always been the only keeper, but usually one of the field players has goalkeeping experience just in case she needs to go in. She switched clubs this year and the new coach is debating whether to just have her or add a second keeper, and I really hope he doesn't. They have a keeper that switched this year to play on the field, so they do have a backup just in case. I can see where it would get worrysome though, if an injury occurs that's going to take them out for a good chunk of time, and you don't have a backup, that team is screwed. General rule of thumb is that you want half the number of field players as subs plus a goalie. So for 11 v. 11, you want 10 + 5 + 1. You do a disservice to goalies by having a sub. Goalies need to play as much as possible. Really should let goalies play for multiple teams.

He already feels like he stands around too much in goal that sitting on the bench half the game isn't worth it.

16 or 17 is about right. 18 seems to be the tipping point for discontent about playing time.

16 or 17 is about right. 18 seems to be the tipping point for discontent about playing time. A lot of teams start with 18 and by end of fall with injuries they're down to 16 and two of those are keepers. Plus there's always that one family that changes their mind after they accepted and then dont come.

AFU has decided to max out rosters at 15-16, though I know of some teams with only 14. I think there's some intention to play-up lower players from GYSA teams to SCCL and SCCL to ECNL. Will see how it works out.
