I figured this would be a good separate thread as with many clubs doing supplemental tryouts, how was you read into that? Understandably there will be supplemental tryouts for teams on the lower end as everything generally trickles down from the top team but how would you read or should I say how should we all read when you see supplemental tryouts for some of the highest level teams at various clubs? Not looking to bash just more less looking for dialogue as I think it can be interpreted in various ways.

Cash grab? Trying to have as many lower teams as possible.

If it's supplementals for the "highest level" teams, then I would think the coach is looking for depth or looking for something they don't currently have.

I think it depends on what they are looking for at those tryouts. At the higher levels I would hope they were able to fill a team by tryouts considering 80% are full prior. I am aware of a few that are looking for depth, especially at GK . Where I would be upset is if there were supplemental tryouts at the higher level and still looking to fill the team. I'd find it hard to believe that a coach can't find a player based on the volume kids that worked hard last week over 3 dys.

Seems many top level teams carry two GKs (except AFU 05 girls ECNL). That kind of dries up the supply and keeps lower levels teams from always being able to find reliable keepers.

No idea why clubs insist on having two keepers on upper level teams. Keepers need to play for as many teams as they can and need to play as many minutes as possible. Cannot replicate the decisions that keepers need to make in practice. Tim Howard said that he would play on 3 or 4 teams and then guest play for other teams as much as possible. Have two available for game days in case of injury but roster the keepers on several different rosters and let them play. Getting half of a case for a keeper stunts their long term development.

In my opinion. Any parent of a kid going to supplemental tryouts saying they might get playing time on an upper team or make an upper team better realize it is most likely not true and just a ploy to get you to come and take a spot on a lower team.
I have heard many parents tell me the coaches say exactly that above, and we all know that 99% of the time those DA, ECNL, NPL, NL teams are already a done deal. Will your kid get to club pass on a higher team occasionally? Maybe if they have issues fielding enough kids a few weekends, but the likelihood is that your kid is going to be on a lower team unless your kid plays GK.

It’s as simple as this. If a Big Six is running supplemental tryouts it’s for bottom teams to just get rosters to 16+ so those secondary teams above don’t have to roster players down.
For the smaller clubs, yes there are spots still on those top teams and bottom teams. We genuinely have spots on Classic 1/Athena A left as we don’t always just add players to get their money. This week we’ve had more then most in years past reach out as they found out last minute their teams imploded due to this sccl bullshît.
Funny how so many families got suckered into believing sccl premier is so much better the Classic 2 and Athena B. I guess the sheep just enjoy the new shiny overpriced league over the older one.

I'm not here to argue with you, as I know your feelings on SCCL from plenty of your posts, but you are absolutely wrong about SCCL-p. It will be better than most Classic II and Athena B divisions of GA Soccer. I can tell that just by how the SCCL top division did in their two tournaments at the end. If we all take off our rose colored glasses I think this is how it is: 1) DA/ECNL 2) NL = upper tier NPL 3) SCCL = upper tier Classic I/Athena A or lower tier NPL 4) SCCL-p = mid to lower tier Classic I/Athena A and upper tier Classic II/Athena B I don't think anyone can argue the above isn't true unless you have a vendetta against SCCL or a vendetta against GA Soccer.

Yeah, I don't know anyone is saying "so much better" than B/II, but at least in the 05/06 Girls all or all but two of the teams were A this Spring. But I don't personally know how much the addition of the -P affected smaller clubs, or even how much shakeup there was on the big 5 3rd/4th teams.
Our 06 team that will be playing in the -P only picked up 3 players who weren't on the team last year (one from a big club, one from a small club, and one MAY have been pulled up from a lower team at the club). AFAIK, all of our ECNL additions came from big clubs (and 3 left to go to other big clubs).

I don't know why the clubs do that to their 2nd and 3rd teams and I don't why any keeper would want to share their limited time. On the girls side at the 03/04/05/06 level there aren't many quality keepers to begin with so they could easily go to a club that needs them and play a full game but they stay to be the 2nd keeper - for what purpose? To say they are on the top team? Each year (including this year) you hear about clubs looking for keepers on the girls side and yet some clubs at this age group carries two GKs while club X (with a decent team) is hunting for a keeper. Its baffling.

Wow, tell us how you really feel! Sounds like you suffer from little man / little club syndrome. Seriously speaking though, lots of good small clubs. Also some crappy small clubs. Lots of good teams at the big six, also some money grabs. Sweeping generalizations like this make you sound really petty.

My kid almost got caught up in this scenario. It was flattering to be wanted by an upper-level team. It was nice to be held in fairly high regard (and offered a spot after her first tryout). But in the end, she selected a team where she could be the sole GK. Oddly enough, she said one of the main reasons was that if she made an error in the first half - splitting the goal would eliminate the opportunity for her to make up for it in the second. Win or lose ... she will now have much more control over the fate of her team. The power of that opportunity beat out the perceived hierarchy of alphabet levels.

Same here, she could have had a slightly higher level where she was one of 2, or the next level down where she would be the only one and picked the lower team. She'd rather play more. It would be awesome if keepers could play on multiple teams, she would play every day if she could. “On the girls side at the 03/04/05/06 level there aren't many quality keepers to begin with so they could easily go to a club that needs them and play a full game but they stay to be the 2nd keeper - for what purpose? If you think these SCCL Premier teams are anything more then Classic two or Athena B please defend yourself.
These are third tier teams!!! Only one club in the metro can field DA/ECNL (First team), SCCL (second) and then have a competitive third team in sccl premier that would be classic one or Athena A level.
That’s like saying five years ago clubs had ECNL, R3PL and then top Classic 1/Athena A and except for the rare occasion in maybe one or two age groups no one did.
Numbers don’t lie and the number of players in Georgia have dropped since the age mandate and just by giving you Lil Billy and Susie a new league name doesn’t make it better.
Oh and I’ve got a kid on the ECNL side, SCCL side and Classic side so I’ve seen a lot of the same mediocre soccer. 👍🏻

Oh and I’ve got a kid on the ECNL side, SCCL side and Classic side so I’ve seen a lot of the same mediocre soccer. 👍🏻 But the problem is that the landscape of soccer has changed in the last 5-7 years. I’d argue for the worse. DA, Ecnl, rpm, SCCL , NPL etc does dilute everything. Gone are the days of real promotion/relegation where state cup meant something. Quest is gone. Cobb FC gone. Dacula, all gone. The landscape has changed. I love some of the top teams at Ambush, Roswell, and Inter. But tell me how their second team can help a middling player at a big club. You know, a big club whose third and fourth teams can mercy the small clubs second teams. So a kid that is not top hat Ecnl or DA elite, and hasn’t played the games to get in the right squad at a few others, why choose Chiefs or Impact over third team UFA or Concorde Or SSA versus play SCCL p? If you really look at the teams, not just throw up sweeping arguments, it is easily high Athena B/classic 2 or maybe low Athena a/Classic 1. Why is that a problem for some people? Small clubs bizatch about the big clubs stealing players and the hypocrisy of big clubs. Do something about it. Make a better product for those girls/boys that are on the fence. This isn’t about true big clubs stealing money. It’s about the small clubs doing a piss poor job of promoting, running a business, and being better for your current clients. My daughter took a break from big club to play for a small club, specific coach. It was at least two tiers below where she should have played. That coach told her at the end of the season to go back to the big club environment. She was too good to be stuck there with limited resources and numbers. Small clubs need to be better.

Why should she have to share a spot when she can have her own spot and be fully responsible for the goals. It is not a good feeling when you are splitting time because if there is a goal during your keeper's half you know the parent of the other keeper is sitting on the other side saying "my keeper would have saved that" - when no two scenarios are EVER the same in soccer. You have plenty of battles to fight when you are splitting time as a GK especially if the "1st" keeper goes in the first half with the starters and then you have the "2nd" keeper go in with the players coming off the bench. <- that poor keeper has a harder battle to fight when you have 2nd string defenders. Glad she was approached but I'm happy she made the choice to be the only keeper.

That team would be that locations 1st team. Since those clubs still have DA/ECNL, then you can say its a 2nd team. Having had kids play also in different levels and leagues, I can tell you that the amount of travel that some of the Classic 1 teams did last year, was more than the SCCL teams did. I think we just need to wait and see what happens next season. A lot of people talked crap about SCCL last year, but from what I heard from people that participated, it was a good experience.

Have two available for game days in case of injury but roster the keepers on several different rosters and let them play. Getting half of a case for a keeper stunts their long term development. I think this is a result of the various league rules where you can't play more than 1 game per day, can't play with other teams, etc.

Yes of course various age groups may mix it up a little, but I think that is a pretty accurate representation as well. I just know it is not some Classic II/III or Athena B/C league like the small club people on here are trying to say, and neither is it some elite league that is as good as DA/ECNL like the SCCL fans try to say sometimes. The truth is it is somewhere between those two extremes.

Not close:on Girls side at U14 when all alphabets are present: DA ECNL National League Piedmont NL=NPL SCCL =Athena A SCCL premier = Athena B The rest See this is where I have issue with general ranks. You have to break each one down into an Upper and lower tier and sometimes even mid-tier. Not all teams within an alphabet league are as good as the top teams. Now I think it is easy to say DA/ECNL are the top dogs. After that I think you have to break down NL/NPL/SCCL/SCCL-p/Classic I Athena A/Classic II Athena B into tiers when comparing them to each other. Not all of SCCL = Athena A or Classic I. I saw in the tournaments SCCL teams beating NPL teams and hanging with ECNL teams. So I think SCCL as a whole is more lower tier NPL, lower tier NL, and upper tier Classic I/Athena A type teams. That being said since we haven't seen anybody play in SCCL-p yet we can only speculate, but if it is like SCCL I would think it would break down to mid to lower tier Classic I/Athenta A and upper tier Classic II/Athena B

I think it's kinda funny that people keep equating SCCL-P to Athena B when at least 60% of the league is made up of Athena A teams.
But you're right that we will need to wait and see how it goes. I think SCCL and now SCCL-P have had a desirable effect...pulling more high-level players from smaller clubs to the bigger clubs.

For instance, I know one upper tier NPL team that has now become their DA team, and as you stated, were merely equal to the upper tier SCCL teams in direct competition. Hence my adjustment to the rankings I gave.

On the girls side of SCCL-P, I expect SSA to struggle the most in the 3 youngest select ages, followed by GSA and UFA. NTH, CF and AFU should be the stronger of those age groups, older age groups will likely be different. No one knows what Carolina FC has. But they will have to play the games to see.

Seeing posts on social media and on this forum for supplemental tryouts at big and small clubs and different leagues and genders especially in the older age groups. I think there are finally too many leagues and club changes for the market. Living in north Fulton I have 4 clubs within 20 min drive. Probably 3 more within 45 mins. Now clubs are scrambling to fill teams with quality players and not just bodies. My child started his middle/high school years with the birth year change and a new league every year after that. Every year it’s anew team turnover. Moved to more local club to lower commute and ultimately chose to play slightly lower level but hopefully stable team he enjoys. If his team would implode in his senior year, he would probably just quit playing altogether. Why bother with a new team for four months?? How do you know what team you are getting since the teams are turning over every year? Sad since he started high school playing ecnl and a quality player. Too much turmoil year after year for 4-5 years now and no stability that I don’t think that has helped players get any better or find a team that really matches their level.
