Cristina Unkel is the 'rules expert' for the WWC. She is supposed to provide expert analysis on controversial calls.
I haven't heard all of her comments, but I've disagreed with every comment I've heard. If she is the standard for women's officiating, it's no wonder the officiating is so awful.
Example from the Germany v. Spain match. German attacker, running at full speed, launches a cross. A Spanish defender arrives late, jumping in front of the attacker as she serves the ball. The attackers follow through lands on the defenders ankle from behind (she had no where else to go).
Unkel - clear yellow card. WTF? If anything, the defender came late, caused the contact, and was 100% at fault.
Also disagree with the VAR review of the Nigeria goal. Attacker clearly launches her arm at the ball, probably makes contact with her hand, which helped distract the onrushing keeper and possibly deflected the ball. Probably would have scored anyway, but not the right decision in my mind.

was she also the rules expert for the US womens game, because I was thinking the same thing, she wasn't doing a very good job expressing her opinion in an educated manner.

I disagreed with there as well. Clear penalty not called on Mewis (pulled down from behind early in the game) and a clear penalty not called on Horan (chopped from the side). Like I said, if she is the benchmark, we are in trouble. IMO, she's become an ego-driven official who thinks her opinions are more important than the players who actually do the work. At one time probably a competent referee, then got promoted above her ability. Notice that the other commentators mostly disagree with her as well, or remain silent.
