So long story short, I went to my daughters orientation this weekend for college and was talking with one of her roommates parents whose son just gave up competitive hockey at age 12, so that he could have a life... Kid said his life was hockey hockey and hockey and he wanted to hang with friends, school etc.
Family was from Chicago area (I get the impression upper middle class suburbs): $10,000 just to be on the team doesn't include equipment - he said skates are about $900 he then spent another $15,000 at least on travel. He did caveats that his kids team was the highest level and they literally traveled the globe to play jr hockey.

Just because something else is more expensive doesn’t mean competitive soccer is not expensive...it still is.

Just because something else is more expensive doesn’t mean competitive soccer is not expensive...it still is. My thoughts exactly. Club soccer is still too expensive....

It’s just as bad as we think. Hockey is just worse.

I think the bubble is going to burst here soon and more and more kids are going to stop playing these expensive sports. It’s just all a cash cow - if only my kids were 6’8 and could dunk!! One of my kids actually might give it up for hoops — we will see www.gabasketballforum.com

It is not expensive to play club soccer at all clubs and at all levels. It IS expensive to play HIGH level club soccer at certain clubs. You can play academy and select at some clubs for $800 or so per year, which really isn't that bad. Even adding tournaments it isn't too much more. What adds up is the travel out of state in "high level" leagues and then out of state big tourneys like Disney, Jeff Cup or others which have higher fees or playing big ECNL/DA showcases which are multiple days and generally a plane flight.
I do think SCCL is an attempt to try to control the costs. Two out of state trips...only one overnight.
We are definitely allowing for the greater costs by paying them and chasing the GLORY of the big tourneys and showcases. Chasing the dream of playing "high level"
