Who is the best player since then? This is a debate that could go on and on... is it Rapinoe? Meh... lots of choices... idk.
Hope Solo? Abby Wambach? Carly Lloyd?
Interesting question to me.

To me the legacy of this team is that it takes 11 not just one. Even in Mia’s generation there were eleven contributing every time. I think this is validated by the difficulty of identifying one star.

I see your point, but every sport has a GOAT... Micheal or LeBron, Brady or Montana, etc...
Just tossing the question out there... just for fun.

I see your point, but every sport has a GOAT... Micheal or LeBron, Brady or Montana, etc... Just tossing the question out there... just for fun. It IS a fun debate, but that is what it is...a debate. The problem with our current fascination with GOATs is that there really aren't any. Maybe you can argue the "greatest of THEIR time" like the two examples that you gave, but even those are debatable against other worthy players. It all depends on what you like...the Messi vs Ronaldo debate is the same. The USWNT is the same. How do you compare Hope to Abby to Mia to Rapinoe and on and on? It is what they won? What sets them apart? What they have overcome to accomplish their feats (IMO the MOST impressive thing is becoming great when the beginning is humble or against odds). So everyone has their faves. Personally I cannot even tell you who I think is the current best USWNT player. They all have a different style and different things that they are good at. That is why the TEAM is so good. We have the clinical finishers, the speedy-get-behind-a-defense types, the good in the air players, the flashy footwork players, the play a great through ball to a player making a great run players, the lock down the midfield players, the play a great switch to break down a defense players! We have it all.

And we have Julie Ertz who will knock your ass down, like a linebacker.

And we have Julie Ertz who will knock your ass down, like a linebacker. That was who I was referring to as the lock down midfielder. I know some don't like her style, but I can't crap on her because I played that way and there is something to be said for someone going into a game with a fearlessness. She acts the same way offensively as she flies into the box to score goals. She isn't flashy, but I think she can be fun to watch. It is a contact sport after all and as long as you are not actually trying to injure people I have no problems with rough play. By all reports she is actually a wonderful person, bubbly, happy and sweet.

Still have to go with Mia. Wambach was close, Wambach's injury in the middle of her career was a slight set back and she was on the end of 2 misfortunate losses in the world cup. In 2007 Coach benches Hope for scurry and they lose 4-0 in the semis, then in 2011, if i'm not mistaken, they go to pks, and US missed their first 3 kicks and only Wambach converted. In her prime she was deadly on the ball, it wasn't until the end of her career where she became the dominant target in the box.
but look at Mia's resume --
Year Team Championship/Medal 1989 North Carolina Tar Heels NCAA National Champion 1990 North Carolina Tar Heels NCAA National Champion 1991 United States FIFA World Cup Champion 1992 North Carolina Tar Heels NCAA National Champion 1993 North Carolina Tar Heels NCAA National Champion 1995 United States FIFA World Cup Third place 1996 United States Olympic Gold 1999 United States FIFA World Cup Champion 2000 United States Olympic Silver 2003 Washington Freedom WUSA Founder's Cup Champion 2003 United States FIFA World Cup Third place 2004 United States Olympic Gold

Since the question stated "since Mia Hamm", I have to go with Wambach. Rapinoe is probably the best current player, though that can certainly be debated, I don't think she is as good as Wambach or Hamm, or Akers.

Yeah the Rapinoe twins aren’t really known unless you were around Portland Pilots soccer or NorCal. Just think what could have been had Rachael stayed healthy as some say she was the better finisher to Megan being the better midfielder.
Both though have gone through multiple ACLs tears and lucky for the US Megan’s weren’t as bad as Rachael. So much fight and determination in that family.
Best player since Mia Hamm? Tough but either Megan Rapinoe or Hope Solo. Hell, Solo by skill level was probably better then half the men’s keepers during her time.

No way a GOAT... Rapinoe only what 49 goals since 2006. I'll pass. she's getting more attention cause of hair and political than playing soccer.
Lloyd or Morgan before Rapinoe for sure.

Agreed overall that Rapinoe is not the best player, but for this WWC, she's currently looking like MVP/golden boot/golden ball front-runner (depending on today's match). It would be a good way to end her final WWC.

I love Alex Morgan, but she was completely ineffective against Spain, of limited effectiveness against France (maybe 3 or 4 good plays all game though one of them won that first free kick), hasn't had a goal since the first game against Thailand, and hasnt had an assist or even a hockey assist in 3 or 4 games either. She is a threat and makes the team account for her, but she is not doing better than Rapinoe in this tournament SO FAR. Also interesting that Rapinoe took both PKs against France which is strange given Morgan is the striker, leading goal scorer.

Not sure if she's 100% healthy or what - but she really hasn't scared any defender since the Thailand game.

I think Morgan is a bit gimpy. Thailand was easily the worst team in the entire tournament. Morgan's 5 goals were all in that game and she has completely disappeared since.
Best player on the team overall is probably Lloyd though. Probably Morgan 2nd and Rapinoe 3rd.
Best player of this World Cup tournament is Rapinoe. 2nd place to Ellen White. Will see how it goes between those 2 in 30 minutes.
This will likely be the final WWC for 10+ of our 23 players (possibly more).

How many fouls did she get in the short time she was in there. It felt like Everytime she had the ball she was fouled.
