In case you missed it, the US Women's National Team won the World Cup for the 4th time today by beating the Dutch 2-0 to hoist the WC Trophy. Megan Rapinoe won for the Golden Boot along with the Golden Ball. With Alex Morgan winning the Silver Boot and Rose Lavelle winning the Bronze Ball. Love the US Soccer quote on Twitter - 7 up, 7 down, Nothing Given, Everything Earned. Congratulations to the ladies for going over to Le Frogland and kicking butt - 🇺🇸⚽🇺🇸⚽🇺🇸 Vamos USA

While it would be nice, won't happen here. Not without a LARGE influx of money. Why?
1 - Theres only 9 teams.
2 - The few games that are televised are on Lifetime.
3 - Theres a political stigma on the league/sport due to a few very vocal players. The primary reason the USWNT does well with ratings is the crest on their shirt. For some, patriotism outweighs socio-political differences. For many, that is still not enough.
4 - (My observation) Most younger girls don't care about sports at all much less pro sports.
Conversely, MLS is RAPIDLY expanding. NWSL has added 3 teams in the 6 years following inception and it seems like Sky Blue is teetering on the brink as their top draftees dont even want to play there.

They just announced a TV deal with ESPN. Any deal is better than no deal. And apparently Budweiser has put their money where their mouth is. Deal brokered by SUM, so the NFL owners of MLS will get their slice of the pie... because of course they will.

Will be very hard for a pro womens league to make it with so few teams. I'll give credit to Budweiser, but we have seen this before after the world cup and its hard to maintain the magic of the world cup.
The world cup for both the men and women is must watch tv, its unreal- its the ncaa tournament on crack, its the BCS championship on steroids, its the super bowl for the world -- love it! already miss it.
I really enjoyed watching the dutch play, Martens and Danielle van de Donk are phenominal players. Bottom line the US is just a direct team, that's how they are going to play and you know what it wins. They dominate teams with big balls, and through balls, and high energy play.

Bottom line the US is just a direct team, that's how they are going to play and you know what it wins. They dominate teams with big balls, and through balls, and high energy play. The US played direct at times, but they had a lot of nice combination passes. I thought the mixed it up very well. But the team and the coaches know they need more Lavelle types who are good on the ball. Rapinoe even said it in one interview before the final. Part of the problem with the pro league is the lack of money behind it. In Europe the teams mostly have big clubs backing them...Chelsea, Man City, now Man U, Barca, Atheltico, soon Real Madrid, PSG, Lyon, etc. The MLS clubs don't have as much money. But what I think is going to happen is stepping up of corporate sponsorships. Nike has had an that aired yesterday during the Gold Cup celebrating those women. Nike...the same company that just dropped 6 figures (not released how much but more than 4 years in college) on a 13 year old girl soccer player and that was before the WWC. Budweiser stepped up. I think it is going to improve, but you aren't going to see the NWSL players suddenly make great money. Heck, many MLS players don't make great money. But I think the USWNT will get more than they did with the pressure on the federation. If Nike gave every NWSL player $10,000 and Budweiser did the same...now all of a sudden these girls are making a living wage when combined with their NWSL salaries of $20,000. Have them do an ad or two and it isn't even charity. If you are already sponsored by adidas or puma or someone they kick in the same instead of Nike. These companies have the power to help and they just might do it.

This highlights the disconnect between NWSL and US soccer --
The US women will play a multi match victory tour starting on Aug 3. There are 2 NWSL games on that day -

HAHA, and Rapinoe bizatching about FIFA allowing the WWC/Copa America/Gold Cup the same day. Surely they could play around the NWSL schedule...

My bad, I missed apparently old news from 4 days ago...
Must have missed what I said about needing a LARGE influx of money.
I'm stating this as an objective political centrist and realist. No idea about Fox News lovers, just observing the political dynamic that got Trump elected when half the country thought there was no way it could happen. The political stigma affects half the country, you know, the ones clinging to their bibles and guns...the ones who love college football who started abandoning the NFL after Kaepernick and the NFL's attitude. The cities and rural areas are widely divided on politics. Unless they "tame things down", Joe Six-pack will never watch (hell he probably won't watch anyways), and the NWSL at best will have less attendance than the USL. There are places that could be anomalies...like Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, and Atlanta. IMO there is a HARD ceiling on women's professional sports...at least until the women can beat the men. And professional women's sports in the US will suffer greatly if a few Tifanny Abreu's get into the mix.
What percent of elementary and middle school girls play sports? Or watch sports? On Mondays the boys are talking about the big games from the weekend, very few of the girls are. Even moreso, girls focus on THEIR SPORT, whereas boys are watching football, basketball, soccer, baseball. The volleyball and basketball girls could care less about soccer, they have no idea what the NWSL is, just like most soccer girls probably don't watch the WNBA. Maybe you have a daughter who watches all the sports?
House was right about the world cup being like all the big tournaments amped up...and interest waning quickly afterwards. I remember the 1994 and how excited the US was about soccer. It was supposed to be the tipping point for soccer in this country. Nope. Did you watch the USMNT Gold Cup final? 90% Mexican fans in the stands...in CHICAGO. US fans don't even care that their team was playing in a big tournament in our home country. ATL UTD and the excitement around the club is an anomaly, we're spoiled.

ATL UTD and the excitement around the club is an anomaly, we're spoiled. I am not good enough to just quote the parts that I want, but the NWSL lost their contract with Lifetime many months ago so while the 4 days ago on ESPN thing is recent you were still off on the Lifetime thing. You are over generalizing boys. There are MANY MANY boys who don't give a crap about sports at all whether they are playing it or not. There are MANY MANY girls that do. I have 2 brothers, both played football, basketball and baseball as kids one also played hockey when we lived in a place that had it. I (a female) was the only one of the kids interested in watching football with my Dad. Or baseball. Not a hockey or basketball fan. In college and until I had my kids playing sports there was not a man that I knew (and my job is male dominated...I know A LOT of men) who knew college football better than I did. I know the pros and the analysts did, but I could quote stats of every SEC player at that time. Tell you coaches win loss records. How many seats in the college's stadiums. I was called the Football Goddess (haha wink at Futsal Gawdess). So I think you are over generalizing women (and girls) watching sports too. One thing that IS different though is that I think kids watch less sports on TV live than they did before. They go online and watch highlights of their favorite players rather than watch most games live. The world cup final, el classico, the derbies for their favorite teams they might watch live, but a lot of the rest watch it when they can. So that is part of the issue about sports. I did watch the Gold Cup final last night and was embarrassed that 80-90% were Mexico fans. That is awful for our players. BUT that does NOT happen when the women play in the US. The women have many more US fans in the stands than the men. Even at the World Cup in France against the French there were more US fans there than France fans. No question that we have a long way to go in womens sports but as a dad of a girl (maybe more than one...I don't know you) you should be doing everything in your power to support women in sports, entertainment and other high visibility jobs because it will trickle down to your daughter or granddaughter when she wants to be something when she grows up. These women pave the way for ALL WOMEN. Trust me.

My boys watch a lot of sports, but the reality is they know every single nba, nfl and fifa player because of their ps4 and fifa, madden and nbk2kXX.
