Drink plenty of water and have fun. First time in several years that I will not be going and I'm already missing it. Not only missing my kids soccer games, but the nights drinking beer with the other parents, watching other games, speaking with parents of other teams, etc.
Why do you always miss something once its gone?

It gets extremely hot. Some fields are worse than others with regards to summer bugs. I think the deadliest is field no. 11! We've stayed at an extended stay hotel with full kitchen so have brought home cooked meals. Not too much around in terms of fine dining. We actually grilled and partied as a team once...loads of fun. But I recall one of the dad's had to drive across the border to Phoenix to purchase liquor. Columbus is now the second largest city in GA, after Augusta, with Fort Benning being a major employer. But when you drive within a radius, you can tell that the economy depends largely on the funds brought in through the GA State Cup. We are heading down as well for the third or fourth time, I think - looking forward to a great state cup result.

Sorry, but so much of what was typed sounds like Atlanta elitism . . . maybe an overreach for me. There are plenty of good places to eat in Columbus; it is not as if you are in the Okefenokee Swamp. Check with locals; you will find some. The south part of town near the base is somewhat sketchy, but I would imagine there are just a few sketchy areas in the ATL area also. Along with the base, Columbus also has many large white-color business in medical and banking (Synovus) - not to mention the home office for AFLAC, Carmike Cinemas, etc. There is also a good bit of interesting Civil War history there with the old foundry along the river, which is beautiful even though somewhat polluted from passing through Atlanta. By the way, it is a laugher to think that GA State Cup effects their economy that much. There is way more pushing the economy down there - clearly Fort Benning. If State Cup were removed, it would hardly be a blip on a radar screen. And, no, I am not from Columbus. I have some of my wife's family down there and have spent a good bit of time down there at State Cup and working. I am not a resident of the ATL area and only visit it when I have to for soccer, work, flights or visiting my son at Georgia Tech (with much concern for his safety when he steps off campus - minor compared to the bugs of south Georgia).
