I get the inability to exhibit technical perfection at that age but that’s the Perfect opportunity for a referee to make a call and make a point.. teach everyone something. Tell them there is careless and there is reckless. Call it whatever you need to.. but call it.

Tell them there is careless and there is reckless. Call it whatever you need to.. but call it. I don't disagree with you. I think the problem is that the referees are often young and intimidated by the coaches and parents. It is hard for then to call those. I was always a physical player, but as a parent I cringe at the many no calls on the field or under calls (call a foul only when it should have been a yellow, a yellow when it should have been a red).

In the 10+ years my daughter has been playing, I have only seen the red card come out once, and that was just last year. My daughter plays forward, and a player on the opposing team became frustrated with my daughter trying to get around her. Right at midfield, she turned around and just kicked my daughter as hard as she could right in the shin when the ball was no where near them. Luckily the ref saw what happened, my daughter kept her cool and more importantly she was not injured. Red card came out real quick.

We had a game where the opposing player was consistently beat by our forward- at one point she turned and pushed her to the ground. The ref saw it and only called a foul much to the chagrin of the parents who were right next to the play. Next possession the same girl tried to tackle the player to the ground which led to a minor dust up and our player giving here a kick as well.
Parents complained another time only to have the center yell out "I called the foul, what am I supposed to do give her a card?"
Dumb question because he already knew the answer. Players- girls or boys need to know the consequences- especially from rough play.

My kid got kicked in the ankle late in a game last year. By late I mean she was already up on her toes on her follow through when the opposing player kicked her plant foot as hard as she could. It was a good thing that she was on her toes and it upended her. If her foot was still planted it would have broken her leg. Clear reckless play and they did not give a card. This was in an alphabet league game that she was playing (but not her regular league...she was guesting). She is also a referee so I know that the assignors are trying to get only experienced and older refs for those games and yet still he did not think it was worthy of a card. Crazy! It was way late and way reckless. Would have been a red in the pros.

I don't get it. Warn, caution, send-off. Its pretty simple. Refs are too timid to punish rough play.

I just think the mentality is in the U8-U12 rec and academy ages they let the cards go a bit, but for some reason a lot of referees keep the mentality into 11v11 games. I can understand younger ages just not having control of their bodies etc... and not wanting to send off a kid in a 9v9 or below game, but by 11v11 the referees need to put their big boy pants on and card people appropriately. There are a few kids on my son's team, if you consistently foul and or do cheap shots and late hits and the referee isn't calling it they are liable to take the player out in a street justice type of move and frankly I don't blame those kids either. If the referee isn't competent enough to call fouls and cards right, then the player has to protect himself from getting injured and persistent fouls. It should never come to that though. If it come to that the referee is incompetent and had lost control of the game long before that takes place.

I've seen refs lose control of plenty of games due to rough play. Usually starts with one team, and once the other sees nothing is getting called, the other feels the need to protect themselves. Then the parents all start getting angry at the refs and opposing players. Things that could have easily been avoided if the ref had gotten control early in a game.
