Is this the same group that owns the USL team?

I believe it is one and the same. There is a local Atlanta player who left AU and preemptively took a position with the St. Louis Academy in anticipation of them making the jump to the MLS. His bet was fortuitous because now they have an MLS Team #MLS4THELOU BTW, it will be the first female Majority Owned clubs in MLS

Expansion is good, it means the sport's popularity is growing and everything that will come with that. One question, how large can the league grow before they have to implement promotion/relegation? 14 teams in a division is a lot. Do they move to 4 conferences NFL-style? In the past next 3 years the league will have doubled in size over 15 years.
What would someone who has followed the league since inception say was the tipping point in 2007/2008?

If MLS could grow to 36 teams, it could separate into 2 leagues, play each team in your league home and away, and then playoffs and tournaments between the two leagues. Old school MLB style system.

I agree with what your saying but there would have to be some cross over games. Would like to see the stars of the West come over to the east coast as well as vice versa. I am just glad the sport is growing and hopefully it trickle down to the women's game. I would love to see that league grow from 9 teams. Would love to see what we could do in Atlanta now with a women's team. Of course to be successful it would have to be centrally located so all could come. Hint Hint Arthur Blank this would be perfect for you

Hint Hint Arthur Blank this would be perfect for you The women's league is already subsidized by U.S. Soccer. Unless the women's league is subsidized by MLS, it will be difficult for it to expand and grow. The WBNA is a perfect example. If it were not subsidized by the NBA, it would be out of business. WNBA has lost an average of $10 million per year for the last 22 years, including $12 million in 2018 despite strong TV ratings and increased merchandise sales. At this point, I do not think that MLS is financially stable enough to subsidize the women's game.

Hearing that the USL team out of St. Louis - Saint Louis FC, team will be shuttering it's doors at the conclusion of the current USL season. I figure the awarding of the MLS expansion team St. Louis City SC may have had a hand in their demise. However, what I find intriguing is that the owner of the USL team is a minority owner of the MLS franchise and so wondering why the MLS club didn't just acquire or affiliate with the USL team? Wonder what will happen with the Academy Team for the USL franchise? Will they be assimilated by the new MLS club?

their were rumors, that they were going to require the USL st. louis group to repay a full new expansion franchise fee. not sure if true, either way -- I don't agree with MLS's expansion methods at all. but who the f**** am I!

Pro/Rel in MLS to me is funny. If anyone thinks owners are going to pay hundreds of millions of $$$ for a franchise in the league, then eventually be relegated to a lower division of the league, they are crazy. I can't see any smart business person agreeing to be put in that situation. If they wanted Pro/Rel, it needed to be planned for a long time ago so all these new owners at least knew the plan.
By the way, I think Pro/Rel is needed. I just don't see it happening anytime soon (i.e. within 10-15 years).

Agreed on not paying tens of millions for the prospect of relegation. However, why is it needed? You could have 100 teams in the league. Split them up into conferences and bring all the conferences together for the final. The clubs just have to be able to buy into the league.

Looks like the MLS Expansion club for St. Louis start date has been pushed to 2023, a year later to cope with the fallout of the pandemic. Officials working on St. Louis CITY SC’s building process have announced that the club will be the only MLS team to have their headquarters, practice facility, training field and stadium in one centralized downtown location. fox2now.com/news/st-louis-city-sc-to-release-new-stadium-details/

If you don't think footy requires pro/rel to be successful with the majority of fans in the US, then I'd suggest you might be --I am crossing threads here--... a bogan.🤨
