one night down, 2 left. after a stressful week with the little ones last week, this one isn't quite as bad. i'm assuming most top players will be told tonight they are safe and clubs will see what types of stragglers show up tonight and tomorrow night.
i have a relative in north carolina. wow, soccer is so much different there. they have no competition between clubs like here. i've said it before and i'll say it again, atlanta soccer is insane. competition is crazy. not sure another city in the country is equivalent - maybe houston/dallas/somewhere in Cali.

Why no competition?? Who do they play? Pinot each other? Our grouping at NSA is going to be tough big talent.

I think the competition improves the overall product. Sure there is some stress during tryouts and allegations of cutthroat recruiting, but we live outside of the metro and the local club where we live is, in a word, complacent. That's why we commute to the metro for practices and games where the product (our club) meets the needs and desires of my children. You wouldn't eat at the burger joint closest to your house that serves a crappy burger, just because of proximity....you'd drive to a place that serves a fantastic burger a little further down the road.
Atlanta soccer isn't perfect, but my family enjoys the heck out of it!

within in 20 miles of my house I have these options: Concorde North and Central UFA AFU NASA Ambush UFA-Norcross Dacula Cobbfc GSA (just to name a few) their big cities have 1 major club that dominates the town.
in atlanta - driving an hour across town for 1 soccer game is standard practice, at the younger ages up there, they think its too much! my kids were traveling around this entire city as u8s. great experience.

Pray the rain holds off - I really don't want to deal with make up tryouts - we had enough make up games this spring from rainouts.
Night 1 - no real surprises. Knew a few from the top team were going to go chasing down ECNL - we'll see how many return tonight. I'm just a firm believer that you have to be a whole lot better than what currently exists at a club to displace a current player - not sure our top team girls can displace that many ECNL girls - but we will see.
Not too many new faces - one rampant club hopper we expected to see again - doubt we see her again tonight though -heard her mom say they wanted to 'field as many offers as possible then make their decision'. Player is good but not all that so it's a little laughable to see this woman trot her kid out every year. If they move (again) it'll be four clubs in four years - yeah, chase down that dream, sweetie!
I just want this week over - we're happy with our team and our coach - hopefully there won't be too much turnover there - it's a great group that gels really well together!

My son is pretty young but it is surprising to me that you guys say this process so competitive and stressful? What makes it that way? Do kids really try out for a bunch of different teams? It looked like tryouts were all the same nights when I scanned a few web sites.

A fair turn out. A few new faces on the premier team - players were informed at the end of night's session that they were on the team. IMO three or four new players would be great to strengthen the team. Not sure what will happen with call-ups/evaluations for either one of the DAs which should be coming up in the next couple weeks. All in all, the future is bright, the pedigree of coaches here is superb; players will continue to develop and have fun.

My son is pretty young but it is surprising to me that you guys say this process so competitive and stressful? What makes it that way? Do kids really try out for a bunch of different teams? It looked like tryouts were all the same nights when I scanned a few web sites. It's only when they get older that this stuff turns 'ugly'. Academy is pretty docile - the only reason we left a club during academy was because the club fell apart (YMCA) - hard to play when there are no teams. You'll see some movement maybe at U12 - parents trying to get their kids on the top U12 teams that go to 11v11. Every club has at least one and it's kind of the precursor to who will be on the elite level U13 teams -when all hell does break loose! Everyone wants their kid on the elite team from the get go - at U13 it's all about the jockeying for Classic 1/Athena A/Pre ECNL teams. Not that it's a guarantee the kid will stay there but it's harder to be bumped off than be the one doing the bumping. Between U13 and U14 I saw a ton of movement - mostly because girls wanted to position themselves to be on the RPL teams (top four at State Cup/top four finishers in Fall Play) . This year - at U15, I'm seeing a lot of jockeying from the girls side to get onto the ECNL rosters - there are three clubs with it - the Concorde team is by far the most successful and the former Ambush RPL team is taking over the AFU ECNL team so that leaves GSA. I know a ton of girls going over there to get the coveted ECNL spot. Here's the problem there - ECNL can roster up to 25+ girls but only 18 dress for a game and not all 18 have to play like GA Soccer rules mandate - they're not subject to those rules. Making the team may mean sitting the bench and even at U15, the game is still the best teacher. Then you have your rabid club hoppers -mostly mommies and daddies who are convinced their little cupcake is the greatest thing ever and all coaches and teams are overlooking his/her God Given talent. Note - if your kid is not selected for the top team more than once, there's pattern there - nothing wrong with Classic 2 or Athena B! Deal with it! I swear most of this competition is self driven by egomanical parents. Let the kids play! My daughter is happy where she is so we're staying where we are! We did get a call from a coach asking her to come tryout- we politely declined - not our style to hop about - she's happy - no price or level of play can beat that!!

There were at least a few girls at tryouts last night who were trying out at two clubs in the same night since the tryouts were at different times. I'm with spectator - we'll stay where we're happy and won't be checking out any other clubs (and definitely wouldn't do two tryouts in a night!). We had quite a few new players last night but lost some from one of our lower teams that didn't do very well this year. If the new players stick around, all our teams should end up stronger. We'll see what happens tonight.

Coaching a lower level team, I have fun watching all the jockeying at the top. My team tries out next week after the top teams have made their picks. Several of my players are trying out for a higher level team. If they make it, I'll support their move. If they don't, I'll welcome them back next week. I love the position that I'm in!

I like your position and attitude Dreaddy sounds like a pleasant place to be, Question comes to mind though, does the top team ever come down and grab your players due to injury or candidates not working working out like the expected? I have seen this through the course of the season, I do not necessarily agree with it but it is happening . Look forward to your candid response

ONE. MORE. NIGHT!!!!
Day 2. Same as Day 1 for the most part. Some top team girl came back after getting a reality check. But up to 4 players per team will move up - great for them - sucks for existing teams. Hopefully replacements will be seamless.
I hate this week

Did anyone get rained out last night? We got most of the way through the session. Most girls knew their spot by Wednesday evening but a few more decisions were supposed to be made last night. I'm not sure if they decided those yet or not. My kids stayed on their same teams and are happy. Several players were moved down. Good for the strength of the teams but a bummer for those girls.

Keep working hard and good things can happen. Did they still end up with three teams? Are you selling parts of her kit to the highest bidder?

Yes 3 teams, we are completely changing colors and brand, so kit will be used as recreation clothes I guess!!

Congrats. It's always nice to hear girls moving up and progressing and to hear clubs recognize hard work.
