I think the article is intended to be humorous. It is silly, but not without some valid points.
I, for example don't care to call a uniform a kit and I find the use of the phrase "on the pitch" irritating, but not enough to go on a rant. I do like the Pacific NW rivalry in the MLS (Cascadia Cup) and their active fans and even their use of Tifos, and I agree their adoption of English style fandom is rather hipster-ish. Regardless, this article looks to me like a waste of editorial space. WSJ obviously has no soccer writer so they take what they can get. It's a great example of the general quality of the press today.
And I don't care. The World Cup is about to start and Americans are taking notice more and more. That's all I care about.

Hmmm...so first they complain cause Americans don't embrace their sport and then when they do they question how they show their love? Ok, first they say It's not soccer...it's futbol...then they make fun of Americans who say futbol, pitch, match and kit but then say they aren't PK's...they are penalties? Holy moley....sounds to me like us Americans can't do anything right? You know what? I could care less...I love soccer...and yes, I just called it soccer.

Uh oh jack4343 has a new affiliation. Where did your kids land? Two places....my u14 girl is now at Atlanta Fire hence the avatar change. It was what she wanted so she's happy. My youngest is still at the club. She has had great experiences at NSA and there was no reason to make a move. We've been at NSA since my kids were 4 so it was a big deal for us to even consider a move at all. Luckily, AFU is very close for us so the logistics are the same.

I skimmed it.
I've been to final fours, bcs national championship games, World Series games and none compare to what I experienced in 1994 at RFK for the World Cup.
Secondly, I'm a huge college football fan and if he's making fun of soccer fans, he's obviously never been to a an sec football game, hell even an nfl game.
I''ll get lamb basted for saying this - but I just don't think a grown man should wear an nfl jersey. Done. I said it.
The World Cup is the greatest sporting event on the planet. End of story. Yes Americans say stupid things to fit in like , nil, pitch, extra time, frame. But who cares.
Terribly written article. Kind of gibberish. And when was the last time England did anything in the World Cup.
