I hope this thread has only one entry, and one infamous member: Fred of Brasil. Here is video and discussion of the episode in Slate's Dive of the Day column: Fred SimulationAnd here is a great series of quotes from the Croatian manager: Niko Kovac has his sayI hope FIFA just leaves Kovac alone. He has every right to his outrage. It would be great if a series of Brasilian footballing legends would call Fred out on this. Maybe that could be the catalyst needed to eliminate this scourge from the game.

Finally saw it....awful. Ref should be removed and Fred should be suspended and fined for flopping. It has to stop. It must stop...to preserve the integrity of the game. Plays like this put the game to shame. There is enough true fouls that happen out there to have to create a foul to get the outcome you desire. If you can't get that outcome justly and resort to cheating then you have cheapened any result your actions achieved. FIFA had better get this handled quickly and decisively. The whole world is watching.

thats where in the time they were preparing for the pk, it took a few minutes, someone could easily have been reviewing it and said - nope, no foul, no pk, continue play.
in real time, you could see how a ref if in a bad position, could see it as a foul. if you never saw a replay, it wouldn't be as horrible a call.
but back to your point, blatant dive!

Maybe that could be the catalyst needed to eliminate this scourge from the game. Unfortunately I think there will be a few names following Fred of Brasil. For example: Suarez of Uruguay (liverpool)- he will not disappoint, he will live up to his reputation. In addition, Sergio Busquests of Spain (Barcelona) will do his thing. You already mentioned Neymar on another thread. There is also Arjen Robben of Holland. These guys are going to keep doing this until a VERY BOLD REF puts a stop to it. FIFA needs to implement Instant Replays as mentioned on this forum on several occasions already. The excuses they give about it affecting the flow of the game is nonsense. Because players fake injuries all the time. That stops the flow of the game at times when the opposing team is on a counterattack. It is becoming like a defensive strategy in many cases. The opposing team is force to be sportsmanlike and kick the ball out of play...nd then a restart may enhance a team's position. A catalyst is needed to put a stop to this, yes.

And of course we have another Brasilian addition (although this one claims to be Spanish), and one of my least favorite footballers, Diego Costa. Diego Costa Takes a Dive
This one illustrates just how engrained the diving culture has become. Instead of taking advantage of a 1v1 on the keeper this Brasilian Cheater decides to reach back unnaturally as far as possible with his left foot, stepping on a defender who had slid harmlessly by, and then fall down in histrionic fashion. He probably could have scored but his first thought was to dive! Embarrassing. I do not agreed with Roberto Martinez that it is an understandable penalty call by the referee. The only good that might come from this is that the match illustrated that Costa does not work with the Spanish team playing style and hopefully will be on the bench for the rest of the tournament.

Seriously, I couldn't believe it as I was watching. Really stinks that they scored a minute later. My feeling, three strikes and you're out. We'll see what FIFA does. It's in their hands now. He stated before the World Cup began that "I think I have been a role model since last summer. I have been professional and I have this desire to forge ahead and play well regardless of what is said to me". My opinion? Pathetic...what is he? 2 years old? The world is watching and waiting for a response. We'll see...until then...here's something to "chew" on...

Punishment is severe, but what have FIFA done to reduce the probability of recurrence? His last punishment was pretty severe also. This one is marginally more punitive, but really just marginally so in the grand scheme of things. The only way punishment works is if the consequence is devastating. Like a 2 year ban. Maybe FIFA could have worked in some required therapy or something as well. Another missed opportunity by the governing body. Also noticed today during the USA pre-game that Adidas is still running the "All in" add with Suarez still prominently involved.

By the way, I had no problem with the Robben penalty yesterday. Marquez was late and made contact. He did not need to do this. He had defensive support. Robben suckered him. Yes he went down easily. Yes he is a shameless cheater and diver (although he claimed some remorse in post-match presser yesterday). He might (and i emphasize might) have been going down before contact. But he also might, in this instance, have really been propelling himself toward the ball. He made a great move to get himself into the box in a dangerous position. Even with defensive support Robben had dangerous options. Marquez got him. There was contact. I blame this one on Marquez. Perhaps karma for the penalty that should have been given at the end of the first half.
