I need help with fundamental MLS academy economics 101 - please educate me because I just don't see how the books can be balanced besides offering a service to a local community:
First disclaimer -- I think offering free fully funded soccer is a major positive and plus for a soccer community. 2nd disclaimer -- I think this is especially true if local talent is rewarded and benefit from this relationship. 3rd disclaimer -- I've come to realize that pay to play isn't the biggest obstacle in youth soccer, many other issues in play (discussed later)
Many mls clubs want to remove the homegrown territories so they can recruit from anyones backyard -
Given the current cost of operating a youth MLS academy we've heard is $3-$4 million per year, that is ~$12-$16 million over a 4 year period.
So every 4 years you need to either sell a player for big bucks or use academy kids on your first team roster that get paid pennies and don't cost against your cap. I guess my point is this --given the volume of kids we currently have seen leave MLS academies for Europe, how valuable is a kid if they stay in MLS and their salary is minimal --- Why would any european club break the bank for a kid making 75k. They'd offer 500K, maybe a million etc, right?
Will europe pay big money for Bello right now? probably not. Campbell maybe so, but even his current market value is listed at $165k

Although it is possibly more like apples to oranges, can you compare MLS academies to the MLB minor leagues?? NHL hockey has a minor leagues like the AHL, USHL, etc. How do those economics work in relation to the major leagues?
How are those viable? I've always wondered how those books are balanced. I don't know, maybe it might shed some light on the MLS philosophy and economics.

Another soccer economics question:
how can a mls club ethically ask players to take a 50% reduction in pay, but then fund a youth academy at the same time? You either have the money or your don't.
Seems like a perfect opportunities for mls clubs to really think and pause their own youth systems.

It probably will affect MLS academies short-term as well.
