I dont think we will ever get pro/rel in the US because it needs to start at the top level - MLS. With the cost of franchises being in the 100s of millions now there will be no way the owners will allow their investment to be "downgraded". This then will permeate down through all leagues who will say if they dont have to do it why should we.

Rifle I agree. Maybe, just maybe ECNL will become an open platform. This is what USSF and ECNL should have pushed for the first time. Now with USSF out of the picture we should look to ECNL to do this. I dont blame clubs that can not get into ECNL creating a platform for their players. Hopefully a pyramid based on Pro / Rel at the club level can be created. With the possible (eventual) demise of the Clearly broken US soccer federation, maybe US club can come to the rescue. ECNL may come to the rescue. That league and Mr. Lavers pre-dated current US Club leadership. Current guy in charge of US Club Soccer is fervently anti pro/rel. Says it's not American.

I think it was Lavers who said that. He didn't say it was un-American, he called it "too destabilizing" and "a relic of a bygone era". Mexico is considering permanently abandoning pro/rel for Liga MX, they have suspended it for 5 years: www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8232135/Mexico-SUSPENDS-relegation-promotion-two-divisions-FIVE-years.html Soccer is not the sport of 20+ years ago. The $$$ gap between 1st league and 2nd league clubs is just too massive. In EPL, 2 of the 3 teams which got promoted last season have gotten beaten down and will be relegated back to Championship league. The one which isn't (Sheffield United) got bought by a SAUDI PRINCE some 6-7 years ago who injected lots of $$$ into the club. Much like Leicester, if you want to be successful coming from lower tiers, get bought by a billionaire. Pro/rel could work with salary caps/profit sharing...down to lower levels as well. I know rifle likes the idea of pro/rel, but I think he may be the same poster who opposes these ideas (Sorry, I don't want to put words in your mouth).

I think you hit the nail on the head with it being destabilizing. Just look at the forum and the discussion with NTH and the percieved "relagation" of not getting ECNL and that was before anything was known.

The destabilization we talk of on this board has more to do with a) the lack of merit-based objectivity that might come from team-based pro/rel leagues b) the silly things adults do to flaunt/break the rules Not saying I agree with pro/rel for kids under 14 or so.

Do what now? j/k I don’t mind a salary control mechanism in club (pro) soccer. I also don’t mind billionaires who want to buy a soccer team. I do mind billionaires who justify a monopoly and crap on everyone else [with the full support of a compromised federation] because they spent some money. F them. And kid soccer above select ages absolutely should be pro/rel in-state with regional and national participation for teams who earn it. I believe that every competitive league based structure that “accepts” clubs based on “non-merit” are bad for the game because they desire control over sport. Sport should be about competition at every [earned] level.. not about out-maneuvering the competition.

One big problem though comes because it is hard in any club based format to have the same team from one year to the next. As an example my daughter made NL three or four years ago the team that played in NL wasnt the same as the team that qualified for it and got smoked. They probably shouldnt have been there but he club met the rules because 75 percent of the kids were at the club the previous year but a number got promoted up from the lower team because a number of girls went DA. This was a particular situation but having over 15 total seasons between my two daughters it has been really rare to have the same team one year to the next.

Well the current one is far from perfect so we might as well think about a better scenario.
