just my opinion -
but i personally didn't think we had an ounce of chance in the group of death. one thing i didn't take into consideration was the american will power and fight. sounds cliche, but its true, when it matters this team seems to play extremely tough and just gritty. not the style of play i prefer, but it somewhat effective. the reality is this team could play with anyone in the cup. not sure if we had the fire power to win games in the knock out stage, but would have held our own against any team.
this team on paper really isn't/wasn't that good. bradley can be great, but than can disappear from a match completely. demps, just plays every game like its his last. josy i think is one of those players that because of his speed demands attention from a defense. still think this squad needed landon. that being said, we should have beat portugal, and had some great chances to equalize the game against germany. clearly played them better than brazil......... we are so close, imagine just a few better/more technical players and style of play. i've never been a fan of this team from a defensive perspective, omar and cameron are not quality players. fabian was solid and beasley was a pleasant surprise getting up and down. i'm not sure why this team doesn't close down the space quicker.
hopefully in 4 years, we have a few younger US made players that can contribute. i know they are out there, i've seen them personally. think how hard it is to get identified in this country, its hard enough making some top DA or top select teams in some cases in your local area, imagine getting identified nationally. a lot of people think the problem still might lie with college soccer though, our perceived best go to play 4 years at college and don't play nearly as many competitive games as the youth of europe and the training is much more limited compared to them. can't blame them though, for 99.999% college is the better choice.
hopefully howard has one cup left in him and julian green develops into the next great world class player. if so thats, all this team needs, one dynamic player that can strike fear in opponents.....is it 2018 yet......
