Some of the AU first team players stopped by the CHOA Training Grounds yesterday. As MLS clubs reopen their training grounds for members of the first team to train and workout, IMO that is the opening salvo to everyone downwind returning to some normalcy of getting back on the pitch. AU and other professional clubs have the funding, space and resources to try out different scenarios. We can all learn from their experiences and should help entities like the USL/Colleges/Clubs/Schools figure out what works and help formulate a pathway for training, tryouts and ultimately a return to the Beautiful Game... - www.mlssoccer.com/post/2020/05/05/mls-players-returning-training-ground-individual-workouts-starting-wednesday

The set up there is kind of how I expected tryouts might me for the young ones. Spread out with different technical skills all set up for one person in a line. Maybe agility ladder, then cones, the other obstacle or passing wall then small goal. You could glean a lot of info about athleticism and skills, just not much about tactical awareness or speed of play. Theoretically they could do game field tactical knowledge but still doesn't measure execution.

I really don't think they will do regular tryouts if the social distancing is still in effect then. They will either do modified tryouts like these training sessions, delay them until some future date, or not do them at all and assign teams based on last year, coaches recommendations, personal assessment with coaches (for those kids changing clubs). As I mentioned on another thread some California clubs have picked teams without tryouts (they normally tryout in spring). They even gave spots to kids from out of state and other clubs based on who knows what (prior level of play or film or who knows).

It's been said that coaches and directors sneak a peek at this forum every now and then. So these comments bring about the question(s) of the day:
- Should we have tryouts? - If yes, normal or some type of modification? - If no, how should we choose and put together teams?
Till a vaccine is developed, I believe "social distancing" is going to be with us, so please factor that into your decision(s). Additionally, DOC for a day time, how would you go about organizing and implementing tryouts? I'd like to hear the suggestions on the who/what/when/why and the how. I will start off with what I saw with AU yesterday. They took every player's temp. before he could get on the pitch. In addition to water stations, they had sanitizer stations too. Masks were not required. No hugs n minimal fist bumps...
p.s. I will try to collate all the suggestions into one cohesive post.

Modified tryouts similar to/much like what was suggested above - agility work, close control dribbling execution, skills tests, quick juggling demo, and maybe passing against a wall or with a coach 6-8 feet away directing them what type of receiving and passing to execute. For older players, test a mile time (if allowed by parents). In my opinion, the above system would be perfect but would require some extra work by coaches (gasp!) and a simple, but manageable scheduling process where maybe 3-5 “lines” are in progress at a time. One player is performing on each line (spread out across the field) at a time so that 3-5 players are “trying out” at a time. Put players in lines based on age where coaches are monitoring and directing whatever needed and can analyze performance.
