the million dollar question - for parents, not sure if clubs are concerned about the rising costs of competitive soccer in america. some good discussion on the soccer channel on xm radio channel 94 this morning on the subject as well (i highly recommend xm 94, great soccer talk)
not necessarily need to talk about about DA, fully funded vs not. partial funding etc.
really interested in the little guys u9-u12.
whats the solution? we have huge clubs in georgia now. you would think bigger clubs, would mean more buying power, cheaper uniforms and being able to reduce costs. I honestly, haven't looked at the books of most clubs, but the ones that run multiple successfully tourneys, you would think have excess cash after field costs/maintenance and other intangibles to reduce costs on an annual basis.
or is the price fine? is it just the norm for participating in competitive sports in america now. and its an issue for the few who can't afford to pay. our club does a decent job with financial aid, and you can have in some seasons, at least 1 kid on each team covered. thats great and all, it covers registration fees, but it doesn't cover the uniform expense, tourney registration fees and travel expenses. for the most part, our teams help cover the expenses of these kids, but its not always fare. we have others on the team that need the financial support as well but aren't getting it. Should clubs/teams do more fundraisers throughout the year.
is this the future of youth soccer though, trying to get private funding to help support a team throughout the year? don't get me wrong, if I had the $$$ I would love to cover the costs of soccer for one my kids teams for an entire year, but I can't. If I was extremely wealthy though, there is no doubt that I would do this.
just some back of the envelope calculations for an ~ 8v8 team with 10 kids. Which is probably an under-estimation. to go to 8 tournaments with 3 out of town tournaments, with registration and uniforms, your looking at ~30,000 a team for 10 kids. I think the top aau basketball teams are similiar to our DA model, where the aau teams get nike/adidas money for travel and uniforms etc. but i'm sure the average team from suburbia atlanta for aau pays a good amount of $ to play aau ball. maybe i'm wrong.
1300 registration
280 uniforms
400 8 tournaments
200 8 tournament misc expenses some travel expenses included
850 hotel costs for 3 out of town tourneys
Total Total x 10
3030 30300
