Charlotte Soccer Academy won’t reimburse parents whose goal is to get refund CHARLOTTE — Brian Bernhardt signed his son up for Charlotte Soccer Academy's spring season. "We paid $195 for a registration fee," he told Action 9's Jason Stoogenke. Rain forced the first practice to be canceled. The pandemic nixed the rest. "So, my son never actually had any practices or any games," Bernhardt explained. He expected his money back but told Channel 9 that CSA won’t reimburse him. "It’s frustrating to me, and I know from a lot of the comments that I’ve received, a lot of people agree with me," Bernhardt said. Several parents think CSA can afford refunds. Action 9 checked the academy’s tax forms, which show CSA made more than $6 million the most recent year and spent about the same -- including almost $2 million on salaries and other compensation. “It’s really the principle that they are taking this money. They didn’t give me the service they said they would provide,” Bernhardt said. When reached by Action 9, the CSA said, "Most of our members are not aware of the planning and administration costs incurred well before their child walks onto the field." The academy also said some of its expenses are non-recoverable. The league is offering a free, four-week summer session and a credit. Parents can put 50% of what they spent on spring toward fall or next spring. CSA also said it’s setting up some sort of refund program for people struggling financially, but it doesn’t have the details yet. If your child doesn’t play again, CSA said you can always consider it a charitable donation. “If we decide to give a charitable contribution to someone, then we’re happy to do it,” Bernhardt said. “That’s a decision we want to make. It’s not a decision we want somebody to tell us we have to make.” www.wsoctv.com/news/local/families-want-refunds-one-charlottes-biggest-youth-soccer-leagues/L65VQ65KKRD2RD2UYVCO3D76HY/

I say to all fellow parents do not feel pressured to hand over another chunk of change upfront. Pay a small deposit now and then commit to pay the rest in August/September when the season happening comes into clearer focus. If you pay now, they are not going to want to refund most of the money even if they gave you nothing. Just... don’t...do...it.

We paid for summer SCCL which is not happening and we were offered a full refund. We were not offered a refund for spring but we practiced for 7 weeks, played in a tournament and played 4 or 5 games. While I wish we had been offered something back for spring I understand it. I am not afraid that they won't refund if nothing happens. I am concerned they won't refund if a similar situation happens where we get into the second week or third week of games and it gets canceled.

Our club offer for a 10% refund (declined), but like oracle said, we had practiced for 2 months, played in a tournament and played a couple games before the cancellation. They didn't refund the end-of-season tournament but allocated that money to next year's tournament. I think that those graduating out might have been able to get that money back.
Many clubs offer a payment plan. Something like 20-25% on signing day, then the remainder over 3-5 months.

Jeff Cup refused refunds as well.. but you can play in some kind of summer Jeff Cup.. which may or may not happen, with teams that may or may not exist anymore.

This is a prime example of where the parents upon hearing of this, galvanize and pressure the club to refund this family's money. Social Media shaming posts, emails, calls and constant texting to the leadership, etc. Like oraclesfriend and atlfutboldad stated, those who kicked off the spring with some practice and/or games are a different situation. We the parents control shizat, we often times forget that and I think we need to collectively remind clubs. I can't believe a club is asking that you pay in full by August. Ummm there are lots of other clubs that will take your hard earned $$$ on some type of payment plan... Next!

And among ECNL sharks it's not just for the sake of money, with the money upfront they secure the spot from you bailing out on them to the competition. Verbals mean nothing these days and all it takes is a phone call and next thing you know a team falls apart.

The feeling about spring is different because of how rainy the early part of the season was. So the beginning of the spring season resulted in a number of cancellations because of weather and then everything stopped mid March. For our team before covid hit, we had 6 practices, 8 practices cancelled due weather, played 4 games, and 2 tournaments, one of which was cancelled on Sunday due to weather. I don't include tournaments since those are paid for by the families separately.

We have a son playing U18/19 ECNL with CSA. He is a graduating senior. I was informed last week by the club that we will receive $700 back this week by check. You could also apply it towards next season or do a donation. Maybe it is different for rec. $195 is probably the recreation sign up fee. We had our other son do that a for a few years and that seems what I paid per season.
