Hello, we are relocating to GA from Texas and I can see from being on this forum that things are different with tryouts for teams even at U11. I have a 10-year-old boy who has played competitively for a while. I wanted to get an idea of the landscape beforehand. If anyone knows some good teams in this age bracket that focuses on development, please let me know. I have been doing some research on clubs in general and I see Concorde, Santos, GSA, UFA, Alliance are top teams (clubs) for their age groups. I know some of these ranking sites I have reviewed only consider wins but I was hoping for information on clubs that develop kids and teach age appropriate soccer. Also, do the kids maintain the same coaches throughout? Commute is not a problem if the program and a coach are a good fit. Any hidden gems out there? Thanks in advance

Be sure to check out Santos. For u11B, the top team has one of the best coaches there. The program is all about development and the coaches almost always stay with their top teams every year (would be unusual for them not to). This particular team has some very good talent.

Ambush is a great smaller, family oriented club as well, and the coaches assigned to that age are awesome for development. They are mainly based out of Webb Bridge Park in Alpharetta. They are doing sessions all week for new players I believe. I am a TM for the 2011 boys, but I can put you in contact with one of the 2010 coaches if you'd like, shoot me a message if so!

Probably also depends on where you're relocating to specifically in terms of the 'hidden gems'. Ambush is Alpharetta, Santos is Roswell, etc. At the smaller clubs they tend to keep the same coach throughout(unless they personally leave or maybe pass off to at a certain point). Bigger clubs tend to move coaches more, but in general they like to keep one coach with the kids as long as they can.

Welcome to the ATL. I know you said commuting is not an issue. How long have you been here? Traffic is much lighter because of Covid-19. Commutes can be 3x-4x longer when/if things get back to normal. Not an exaggeration. Talk to your neighbors about what normal times are from your location during afternoon rush.

Very true-we spend more time commuting to practice (2.5-3 hrs round trip) than practicing.

I would agree with above smaller clubs are best for development at younger ages. You typically see a decline in technical ability in 11 v 11 since it’s a slower game and more tactical in the older ages unless kids are supplementing outside private training. Something, in my opinion, the clubs should be doing anyway but do a very poor job at, especially the BIG 5 clubs. Focus on a club that values small sided approach and has access to indoor facilities throughout the year.

I'll echo the above statement.. really depends on where you plan to live. You do NOT want to be driving across Atlanta at 5pm in certain directions.. really, any direction.

In Texas, it is more of open training. Kids can go train with other clubs from June 1 till signing day.
I have heard the drives are crazy here. 2.5hrs one way to practice sounds like a killer

Thanks in advance First, some have already mentioned this but location is key if you have a kid getting home from school and trying to make it to a 5:30 practice. Be forewarned some clubs have multiple locations so know where your child will be practicing, bc trying to get 10mi away at 5PM can take 40+minutes depending on where you are trying to go. The metro Atlanta soccer scene is a unique one bc there are so many quality clubs in such a small area. Your child is still young so I wouldn’t be looking for the most competitive team (most wins) I’d be looking for the best coach to develop my child during these critical years. Keep in mind which clubs have elite programs, DA/ECNL bc if you want him to have the opportunity, having a player resume in one of these clubs can be valuable when climbing the ranks. Elite clubs love to lock up players from competing clubs come tryout time...

Here clubs can be very protective of their players and even vengeful if they hear player is participating at another club... even in an off season time of year. Sad really.

You can and should find a club within 45 minutes for your 11 year old. Short of training with Atlanta United, I can't envision a scenario where you should not factor in the commute. While there is plenty of "my club is best" on this forum, I guarantee that people would change their view if they moved across town. We're in North Atlanta, and we have six clubs that I'd consider. I have a preference, and I can order them in my head, but I'd take any of those six before driving an hour and 45 minutes one way to AFC for a great coach.

And likewise, very few people on the south side would drive to the north side of Atlanta unless it was Atlanta United or ODP (that practices at Atl Utd training ground at older age groups). There are terrific clubs all over-Atlanta is blessed with great soccer.

That sounds awesome. I’m sure there are problems but it would be nice to have a month...a lot of times you have a minute to make a decision when the coach calls...(I’m exaggerating a bit but you don’t have long for a top team usually)

Plus a majority of kids are horrible at trying out so having the option to join in a couple of sessions to calm the nerves is always good too.

If you are moving to the Southside SSA's branch location of Coweta is good too. Don't know why people always leave them out down there. Besides Cobb location, Coweta location is the 2nd best competitive branch for SSA.

Son played for both moba and afc and the competition and talent within the two clubs is limited. We had 3 dofferent coaches first year at Moba. Went to Concorde and have been very pleased with coaching and level of competition.

AFC, MOBA and HCU should be one club (or an alliance of clubs with a single top team). Between the 3 clubs they could probably put together an elite team at each age group.

They’re AFU South and taking over a lot of the SCCL and Premier 1 spots that AFU North can’t field. I heard they are getting higher then normal numbers coming from AFC Lightning especially for players okay playing SCCL and club passing up to ECNL.

" especially for players okay playing SCCL". It's a good damn league. How it's "looked down upon" by some is beyond me. It's basically been the old RPL level (I'm speaking of the SCCL-C). Some people crapped on it because it shook up the status quo of Ga Soccer, but it has done nothing but shown it's worthy of consideration for those not at the ECNL or DA level yet. Btw, this wasn't directed at you JumpJump, but more at those that don't really know the league... yet continue to hear or even promote false narratives about it.

Coaches usually keep teams for about 3 years

My suggestion for that young is picking a credible program close to where you live. Atlanta traffic can be rough to navigate
