Agreed that a lot of coaches do not know how to communicate to players (or parents, or in general) and quite a few treat 9 year olds like 19 year olds. We have had coaches that I pulled my child from a team after watching how the coach treats players AND adults. Think he was eventually let go but now does privates for $60 per hour. Agree completely that DOCs care very little unless your players is on top team or your family donates well to the club.
At the same time we have had very verbal coaches that initially intimidates the players and other coaches that provide little to no guidance and fall short of what you would expect from a coach. My players got used to the more intense coach but never got used to the lack of feedback coach. Mind you, the intense coach never was mean but direct, defined expectations AND helped the player get better. The no feedback coach was a train wreck.
But I have also seen parents and players who self-delusional who are the worst about when it comes to this type of mentality and treatment on the field and on the sidelines. The youth sports culture really needs to take a good hard look at itself.

As a referee (and former player, coach, and parent of high level players), I've twice tossed a coach for verbal abuse of his own players. Not popular and they were stunned, but I'd had enough. The games were better for it. No idea what happened afterwards either case.
