I saw that a bunch of hollywood stars, Serena and her husband as well as Mia Hamm, Judy Foudy and Abby Wambach are going to buy or create an NWSL team in LA. That is a lot of star power and $. I wonder if this leads to higher salaries. Further, do these folks put their money where their mouth is and NOT link player pay to revenue. I think NWSL has a salary cap, but it would seem these guys would vote for NO cap so they can pay more pay what they deem the woman are "worth."
Note, I am serious. I think this has to push up the salaries when rich people start buying woman's franchises bc they have monopoly money. That said, we keep hearing the "worth" argument. While I think they are talented and worth alot in my eyes, when it comes to ticket sales and TV revenue, NWSL doesn't generate enough money--which in a capitalist society means their "financial worth" is much less. Thoughts?

I wish them well. I'd love to see a stable , profitable team here in Atlanta.

Thoughts? Agree, but I think a NO cap is asking for trouble in relation to the majority of NWSL markets which are market-ably smaller. They'll quickly become MLB and in regional broadcasting purgatory. With LA (star power and dollars) coming onboard, along with others (fingers crossed for ATL) a case can and should be made to drastically raise the salary cap. Larger market, larger tv tune-in numbers nationally really raises the cap and salaries. BTW. I DVR all NWSL matches, even the delayed ones and Women's College Soccer when possible... first to bribe my dd into watching, secondly, every single impression matters to sponsors and broadcast partners $$$. My minimal yet meaningful way of showing support for the women's game.

Thoughts? So my thoughts are and have been that ultimately the womens league in Europe will overtake NWSL as the top league because their clubs generate more revenue. I’m seeing twitter chatter that more than one USWNT Star has signed with Man City. I hope this is the case as it will allow the players to command more money. I understand the economics. I know it’s hard for salaries to rise without revenue. I think the NWSL can not continue being propped up by US Soccer, Canada Soccer , and Mexico federation paying player salaries.

A couple of years ago Lloyd went to Man City and I think Dunn went to Chelsea and Alex Morgan to Lyon I believe. Given that it is likely that all the NWSL will do this year is the Challenge Cup I would expect many top players will consider a season overseas. A big reason for that is to be game fit for the Olympics! Also since they have been doing mens soccer in Spain, Germany and England for 1-2 months they likely have the whole thing figured out with dealing with COVID the players have a better chance of getting in good training and good matches and good salaries! Best wishes to the players that go!
