Don’t expect you’re going to get anything resembling a fairly called match.

Sounds like the norm when you roll into half the clubs in metro Atlanta and Georgia too.

Not saying that referee home team favortism doesn't exist, but I'd say it's the exception rather than the rule, even in outlying areas. My kids have probably played a dozen games in Alabama over the last 4 or so years, and I don't recall one time thinking the refs were biased - the overall quality of reffing has been hit or miss (some good, some bad), but wouldn't say biased.

I wish we'd get some of those home cookin' calls time to time... but they all seem to go against us even when we're the home team!!! lol

A few years ago - Some guy shows up at the field and claims he’s the ref assignor.
Walks out on the field and makes the ref stop play until one of our parents left the field. Best part the parent did absolutely nothing wrong - it was comical.

I referee (well I did and will again next year hopefully) at the club closest to my house. I know the director and about half of the coaches at this club because my kids played there, but I have zero interest in offering any team a reason to criticize my work because of a bias. Home cooking may exist but it’s more likely just people who think every referee is awful and “against” their poor wonderful children.

I haven’t really seen it to any real degree in Atlanta. And I’m not talking about offside or possession calls - who cares. I’m talking about the only thing that really matters when refereeing a kids game - safety and keeping things from getting out of hand physically.

#Rifle-Thanks for refereeing. Started when my kid was doing it. [GREAT job for a teen by the way] Why drive him and drop off then go exercise, go home and come back.. instead get paid to exercise and stay connected to the beautiful game! It was kinda hard adjusting from long time player and fan to referee. But pretty fun and I enjoy the fellowship with the others doing the work. I miss it (the exercise) right now...

Sounds like me too actually. My son has been refereeing since he was 11. I would take him to games and for the first year or so I would stay there cause I mean seriously I wanted to see if my 11 year old was going to get yelled at or not, and of course he did and 9 times out of 10 the idiot parent was wrong on the call or interpreted the rules wrongly. Was my son perfect and is he perfect even now at 14? No he makes mistakes but most of the time the mistakes he makes are subtle ones that only a referee or someone very familiar with the rules would know and usually no one even picks up on it because it is not game changing. I kept telling him I would eventually referee with him, so I got my license in March and then covid happened and didn't see my first game till August at the Concorde Tournament. Talking about trial by fire! They put me in so many freaking games that weekend even centering 11v11 games without experience. Fortunately I did ok in both the centers I had. My issue was it was 90+ degrees and 90%+ humidity that weekend and there were plenty of referees going down from cramps or just exhaustion. I am overweight so the point of refereeing also was to ref with my kid and also lose some weight and get in shape 15 pounds later so far I am able to handle it better, but that weekend was freaking brutal. I cramped in places I didn't even know existed and that was with plenty of fluids and electrolytes. Honestly refereeing with my kid isn't as much about the money doing it as liking to watch the game at any level and being able to referee with my son. Yes I have already been yelled at a few times, but I got thick skin just like my kid. So it will be ok.

I know there are referee shortages but that’s nuts for a brand new referee to get assigned games like that.
I do three games max in a day. Only one center per day unless it’s late in the season and I’m fit then maybe two. Never more. I’m forty nine. These iron men who do five-six are crazy.

#Rifle said, “These iron men who do five-six are crazy.” They also tend to make more mistakes, especially at the end of the day. I agree-three is plenty (unless you are reffing the rug rats).

I was at an out of town event last fall for a high-level league (weird location) assigned by the local booker. Had a brand new guy scheduled for a U16 center. Repeat, high-level league not to be named. He smartly deferred and stayed on the line and let me do back to back centers to cover. Wasn't his fault, he had no idea of the level (only rec experience to that point), but to his credit was smart enough to not do it. Also try not to do more than three a day. Beyond that the mental game drops dramatically.

I think that is why he had me center them and it was the older showcase levels so the games weren't high stakes and I didn't do a bad job in them. The bonus is I feel comfortable doing full sided center duty now.
