Recruiting Dead Period for D1 extended through the end of the year .
So, what’s the point of ECNL and upcoming NL showcases if the D1 coaches can’t be there?

It doesn’t make sense to extend the dead period.. at least let coaches come and evaluate athletes while they are playing!

So let me make sure I can understand this. Pro and College football are up and running sans the Pac 12, CBB resumes late November, ECNL, MLS.Next and every other youth soccer alphabet soup league can return, but coaches can't social distance on the sidelines to watch these same kids play. What do the "No Clue About Athletics" brain-trust think? I bet if it were CBB or CFB recruiting period, it would suddenly be okay and the dead period would just be that. Dead, Period...

It’s all to try and push kids back another year. With so many college athletes getting an extra year of eligibility they have no one to put the HS class of 2021.

Wow, what a shame for these kids and this is going to cause a major ripple effect. I agree with Futsal it is OK for everyone to be playing but coaches can't go to game to watch on the sidelines for an outside sport?
1) If I understand correctly- D2 schools are allowed to recruit and have players visit but D1 schools are on total lockdown? Lot of D1 Fringe players are now going to accept D2. 2) If I understand correctly- NCAA did this so it would stop recruits from visiting the school and attending games. (Parents and Kids will still visit the school but wont talk to coaches. Also aren't games with no fans to start off with?) You should enable the coaches to go to college showcases to at least recruit and watch the players play. You can always have them visit after Jan.
So the NCAA cares about their D1 student athletes but not the others. Bad look

While I agree this extension is totally stupid, I do think showcases have value regardless. These kids want to play their games. They want to play new/different teams. Instead of having people fly across the country though, they should do mini showcases regionally

Speaking of D1! Another busy Thurs evening of sports, including a couple really good NCAA Women's games on the ACC Network tonight! Both games, UVA vs Duke and FSU vs ND will showcase some local area talent to support!

SEC starts this weekend. Will be out of town and will miss USCe demolish UGA.
The dead period extension is dumb as many have stated. The south isn't like the other closed areas of the country.

The dead period includes college basketball and college football. Fall campus visits are when much of the basketball and football recruiting occurs. It is also when football coaches are going to high school games to evaluate players. It is across all sports in division 1.

Regardless of whether the dead period includes some sports or all I think the decision to extend it for D1 and allow D2 and D3 (and NAIA) is a bit ridiculous. More D3 and D2 schools shut down athletics than D1 but there are still a lot of D1 programs that did too.
Her is what I think should have happened...just say no prospective student athletes can make official or unofficial visits if your goal is to protect the student athletes. Allow the coaches to attend showcases and visit other games and training sessions while social distancing, require masks if you want also. But to prevent coaches from going to watch players in person is kind of dumb.
I am glad my kid has a little more time. I would be freaking out if she was a senior (uncommitted) or a junior.

I'm hearing at some ECNL games this weekend, there were sssshhhhhh coaches who were onsite just enjoying the beautiful game. You know with all that free time on their hands. Can anyone independently verify this? More importantly, tell your kids to play like they are being watched/scouted because it looks like they are - Unofficially and Allegedly 🤭😷🤭

All the power conferences are now playing football after today PAC12 verdict to play a 7 game season. Wonder if the NCAA will revisit the dead period. Maybe the NCAA will so something right. Would be great for all the kids who are fighting to get into college.

Looks like the ECNL folks are adapting to the Covid related dead period landscape and providing an opportunity for showcases to be a bit more meaningful for the Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors to be seen with recorded and live-streamed games at their fall showcases...👏👏👏 www.soccerwire.com/news/ecnl-to-record-and-live-stream-all-u16-u19-games-at-upcoming-national-events/The Elite Clubs National League announced today that the league will be recording and live-streaming all games at the girls ECNL Arizona (Fall) and the ECNL South Carolina National Events for the U16, U17 and U18/U19 age groups to support college identification and recruiting.

The NL is offering this as well as they are offering TRACE live and recorded videos for all upcoming showcases BUT for both ecnl and NL this is not as impactful as actual college coaches at the live games. It’s lipstick on a pig in attempt to justify their leagues

Close the league down until recruiting is back on? send the kids to all play athena/classic until the right time?

And yet the colleges are still looking to finish filling their 2021 signing classes and look forward to the 22 and 23 classes. How else are D1 colleges supposed to evaluate players when D2 and D3 are currently allowed to recruit???

Not taking a side but ECNL could have delayed the showcases until 2021 when coaches could visit in person but it’s a nice touch to offer live-streaming for the games. These are unprecedented times for everyone so I appreciate all the leagues innovating during this season. I’m still shocked that we are actually playing soccer.

Per an article in The Athletic... theathletic.com/news/ncaa-expected-to-approve-one-time-transfer-rule-sources/z4VeShqu36oDThe Division I Council is expected to approve new uniform NCAA transfer legislation this week, which will allow undergraduate athletes in all sports to move freely one time without having to sit out, multiple people with knowledge of the situation told The Athletic. The Council was originally supposed to vote on this legislation last January, but the vote was delayed following the receipt of a letter from the Department of Justice that touched on the transfer proposal but largely focused on name, image and likeness legislation. This week, the Council will meet on Wednesday and Thursday to resolve the transfer issue as well as a host of other topics, including what the post-June 1 recruiting calendar will look like. Nothing the group votes on is considered final until the meeting officially concludes on Thursday. The transfer topic is expected to be divided into two votes. The first is the base part of the one-time transfer proposal, which will allow all college athletes, including football and men’s basketball players, to transfer one time and receive immediate eligibility. Currently, all but five sports operate under such a system. This would likely take effect immediately, sources said. “The genie’s been out of the bottle on this for a while now,” one said. The second part of the vote is whether or not there will be notification dates for those transferring and, if so, when they will be. The proposal includes a May 1 notification date for fall/winter athletes to tell their school they are leaving and a July 1 deadline for spring athletes. Also this week, the Council is expected to determine what exactly the recruiting calendar will look like as of June 1, as a 15-month dead period officially concludes on May 31.

the impact has been much bigger on college basketball. Teams have lost 4-5 players to the portal, an recruited 4-5 players from the portal to replace them.
Some schools are limiting how many high school kids they recruit and opting for recruiting from the portal instead, which in turn is less spots for high school players.
but somebody is going to have to recruit the high school players, the question is who - a strange circular recruiting problem.

One thing on the transfer portal that I think people are forgetting as they talk in the media about how it will hurt this or that is it will hopefully make some of these coachs more accountable to the players and their needs. Just as a manager in most professions know that they need to be open and honest with their employees or they will leave now the coachs will need to do the same.

Now the only problem is so many colleges have ID camps on the conflicting days! Question for fellow c/o 23 grads like oracle and older age parents: are you waiting for June 15 when D1 coaches are allowed to reach out and waiting to attend those or are you scheduling ID camps and willing to change if you receive a personal invite later? We are flooded with generic email invites, have received a few that seem more personal, mentioned thanking for highlight video that sort of stuff, but know they can’t be too specific until after june 15

We are planning first choice school camp but it is hard to know how interested they are. Plenty of emails with her name on it but she has been to their camp before Covid. Other schools I am not sure. Ours is stubborn and wants specific criteria in her schools so we will see. She does get more interested when a school emails her but early still. Some D3 schools already interested and talking to her but again can only go to so many...
