For those of you with players in ECNL, MLS Academy, GAL, etc how much playing time do you expect for your kid?
I would assume these players are in these leagues because they want to play in college or beyond. Is 50% playing time each game sufficient to achieve the end goal? More? Less?

I can tell you this if my kid wasn't at least getting 50% playing time in each game (or an average of 50% throughout all games) then my kid wouldn't be on that team and we would look elsewhere or ask to play down. Your kid isn't going to get a scholarship or play pro if they aren't seeing the field.

ECNL doesn’t allow reentry in the half, so that typically leads to coaches waiting longer to sub. If you use all your subs and a player gets hurt, you’re playing with 10. It’s a dumb rule for the younger ages. Nothing is gained. But coaches do have to adjust to it. I know several teams have played with 10 for significant portions of games already this season due to an injury after subs came on. That said, it could result in some kids not getting half a game in every game. Hopefully it evens out over the course of the season. The way to remedy that situation is for the first half subs to start the second half and then bring the first half starters in as subs in the second half.

I would think 50% playing time would be expected unless told differently.
I do know several players that were told up front this year that if they accepted an ECNL spot they would be playing less than 50%. Some took the offer and others declined to play SCCL. I respect that they were told up front but if that were my child I would decline for more playing time.

The way to remedy that situation is for the first half subs to start the second half and then bring the first half starters in as subs in the second half. This is the ideal way to have your starters in and somewhat rested in the critical end of the game (for a smart coach anyways). Also, if you're going to get less than 50% of the game, you should play down (until a sophomore/junior for those who want to play in college). Playing ECNL should be the goal in the prime scouting years and your coach should give you 50% if you're being scouted in a particular game. Once you're a senior you should be getting 50% somewhere.

the more you player the better you get. Some kids can't play for 90 minutes though, they just don't have the stamina to play "their" style of game for 90. In general, the more they play the more exposure they can get.
my take as always been u13 and u14 every kid should be playing at least 50% a game regardless of the league. starting at u15 in the top leagues, you will see a shift, top 75% of players play entire game, a few play half and a few play for 15-25 minutes. Maybe some even less.
When on a top team at u15 and above -- there is no such thing as equal playing time, kids have to earn their time and then keeping earning it. When on a lower team at u15 and above, I think kids should play again around at least half the game, with a maybe a few playing all game and a few playing less than half. Again no guarantees for playing time as well, but in general if it's a league like sccl, I think kids should play or coaches should carry a smaller roster.

The u13 and u14 years have players who put their heart and soul into a game and practices, and they get the playing time. There are some kids missing practices, showing up late, jogging when they should be sprinting, bad attitudes and placing blame, and simply not putting any grit into their performance. They get less than 50% time, as it should be. At the more elite level, performance and dedication gets rewarded. That is a life lesson that needs to be learned young.

75% playing time or higher = great fit 50% playing time = acceptable but may not be the best fit with coach or skill level <50% playing time = poor fit w/ coach or skill level. Time to change team or club!
