Ironically, i saw some fodder on this on the other forum, that a friend pointed me to. he forwarded it because some parents at our fields were arguing on this issue the other night. (fyi i know longer visit the other place, unless pointed to a specific post)
how many tournaments and games should a u9-u12 kid play during a fall season?
my opinion, somewhat depends on level of play as well as level of parent commitment and finding a happy balance. For u9-u12 our top teams train 1.5 hours, 3 times a week. teams play typically play a minimum of 10 and maybe up to 15 academy games during the fall. our good teams typically play in 2 preseason tournaments, 1 during the fall season, and then 1 to end the fall season for a total of 4.
I personally have no problems with this about of games. given we live in atlanta, typically you have 2-3 rainouts a season, so it in a sense gaurentees you get games in. otherwise, because of the weather you would never play games!
Yes, we then typically replicate a similar schedule in the spring, with actually fewer scheduled academy games because of the spring breaks and easter weekends. I think we went last spring an entire month and didn't play a game because of weather and spring breaks!!

How much of the practice time is taken up by scrimmages?
A full-field scrimmage between two 11v11 teams means that for the time you are scrimmaging, there are 30-35 kids and one ball, and at any given time there are probably about 10 kids just sitting there watching.

very little scrimmaging at 11v11. there are alot of small sided scrimmages, but nobody is sitting out. to be honest, there really isn't the field space for 11v11 scrimmages, so it only happens on occasion. maybe 1 or 2 times a month. usually our scrimmages will be an extra session or on a weekend when we don't have a game.

That sounds totally reasonable to me and is what my daughter's teams did from U9 through U12, too. One - maybe two pre season tournaments then one at the end. There seemed to be more options locally during the Academy season back when she played - I remember a Columbus Day tournament at UFA and a mid March one down in Peachtree City but I haven't seen those in a while. Metro Atlanta is tournament heavy on the exact same weekends in August - I really wish clubs would spread it out more. For the younger Academy ages, local tournaments can be fun and great learning opportunities - after all, the game is the best teacher and if you can get three or four in locally in one weekend, that's fine.
What I don't agree with is the younger Academy coaches - especially those with strong teams - getting tournament happy to boost their SIC rankings. There was a coach at the Y back when we were there who lived and breathed by where his team was ranked each week in SIC. That team would do upwards of 6-8 tournaments in a single season - many of them out of state. At U10 and U11!
But you are right - ultimately it depends on the level of play and parental/player commitment. An 'elite' Academy team may want the exposure and playing time because they are looking ahead to U13 whereas the kids who just play to play may not want the travel and time away from other activities. I know of some families who have turned down ECNL or RPL when their players made those teams because they didn't want the financial and time commitment either - ultimately it's a parent/player choice how much to play.
