Al Jazeera “ Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero will not face punishment for touching a female assistant referee in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Arsenal in the English Premier League.
The Argentine star confronted Sian Massey-Ellis after he disputed her decision to award a throw-in against his team, touching her on the neck and shoulder before the official swatted him away.
Players can be cautioned for physical contact with a referee if it is deemed non-aggressive and can be sent off if it is considered to be aggressive and/or confrontational. Retrospective charges can only be brought against a player for touching an official if their actions are adjudged as being aggressive and/or confrontational.
Aguero went unpunished during the match and the referee’s governing body in England said the incident was not deemed aggressive or threatening.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola defended Aguero in the post-match news conference...
Tatjana Haenni, director of women’s football at the Swiss Football Association and formerly at football’s world governing body FIFA, said Aguero’s gesture merited at least a yellow card and, while probably not aggressive, it was patronising and sent the wrong message to women looking to enter the game.
“It’s exactly why women sometimes don’t feel comfortable in football,” she told Al Jazeera.
“Maybe that’s why we don’t have so many women in football because we are constantly told what to do, and how this works, and how this is – and we have to adapt to that environment.”“

Though I chose to wait a few days to digest the incident, I honestly thought more folks would chime in on this. Right off the bat, I would say in regards to the act, I personally don't think it was aggressive or threatening per the law, so no yellow/red card was warranted. I also don't have a problem with "discussing" a call with the refs. Sometimes you're teeing up for the next call, getting out some frustrations, etc. However, I still think what Aguero did was inappropriate or at the very least wasn't a good look. He made his argument, it didn't hold and he needed to move on. So what was he thinking grabbing her by the neck/shoulder and seemingly pulling her towards him? In no other world would that be appropriate. We've all been told you never touch a ref, so again not sure what he was thinking. IMO the CR should have had a word with him but then again if you watch the clip Sian Massey-Ellis kind of waves him off and I think she mouths "it's fine" My fear is she didn't want to make a thing of it, I personally would have throat punched him and carried on, but then again, that's just me...🙂🙃🙂

Yeah I heard enough about it on Twitter to not jump on til now. I agree I don’t believe it was a card able offense but I do believe the higher ups at EPL should have fined him something in the 6 figure range for making inappropriate contact.

Like you I wanted to see how this actually looked prior to commenting. I agree it wasn't very aggressive. I would say though it was kind of patronizing with regards to the body language/action. I do not think he would have (has ever) done the same with a male referee. He should just apologize saying it was inappropriate and disrespectful (which it also would have been if done to a male referee). I would be curious to see how she perceived it though. The neck is an area that is vulnerable so maybe she perceived it as aggressive.

The headlines were worse than the video. Three factors for me (as an old ref) - level of play, intent, and AR reaction.
Level of play - very high - emotions can be expressed more than lower levels Intent - more conversational than confrontational - wasn't physically moving or restraining the AR AR reaction - very little - she's in headset contact with the CR - she could have easily called for a card and the CR would have acted
I don't think he should have touched her - and I think the CR should have said something or at least pointed / waved a finger at him - to which Aguero probably would have given some version of an "I'm sorry" body language - but I don't think it was as big a deal as the headline.
