Philip Burns (ex pro, ex US scout) posted an interesting question:
“ It would be very interesting to see statistics on goals conceded from misplaced passes from GK and defenders in their defending third over the past two years . Compared to the same in the previous two years when playing out so deep from the back was not as prevalent !! I get the concept of drawing the opposition on and playing through the press but at what cost Leno yesterday was another of many goals conceded doing this Hey what about getting the GK to drop a pass to the 7/11/8 or 10 rather than 2/3/5 ? If they misplace the pass at least they get another chance to defend the ball Please educate me”

I like the idea - but to take it seriously, someone better at statistics than me should do a cross reference study of how often a team/GK in particular misplaced passes to a 7/11/8/10 and how often playing out of the back resulted in goal scoring opportunities. You have to have all the facets to put together a full picture or else it just comes down to team philosophy of play/“we like doing this vs you like doing that”

Some Pointyball Coaches also refuse to punt or pass because their teams suck at punting or passing. Hmmm.
I do think keepers who launch everything long are basically trying to shove the action closer to the opposing goal. And there is obviously some benefit to field position - especially if your team is good at ball recovery. But I think it shows a lack of tactical sophistication.
I’m a fan of playing out from the back because it puts a premium on intelligence (patterns of play) and skill (defenders who are comfortable on the ball) which I believe are core competencies... that many players never develop because their coach or club just don’t bother. Levels.
But I definitely cringe at teams who never vary their tactics. I love a surprise ball between the lines or over the top.
