My kid is AR at Quest today - be nice!
I dropped her off this morning and took her lunch at the noon break. First off, kudos to NASA for being prepared for this - multiple emails sent to the referees yesterday about the heat, instituting mandatory water breaks every 15 minutes, what to watch for on the field to keep the players safe when it gets this hot; and today, very crowded parking lot but police presence there to keep thing moving and safe. Cops are there for traffic and crowd control I assume. (One note - people, when walking in a parking area - MOVE OVER - some idiot dad and his kids were slow walking right down the middle of where traffic was trying to move. Pedestrians may have the right of way in some places but the middle of the darn lot is not one of them - MOVE ASIDE! )
The brief conversation I had with her while dropping off the sandwich was that Georgia Rush parents were 'ridiculous'. Their team won against NASA but she said they were yelling at the center and her for every call. One dad kept yelling 'Bull Crap' (only it wasn't always 'crap' he was yelling) every time she called an offside. So much so that at the first water break, my kid went to the field marshal and asked if that parent could be watched for behavior. Turns out this dad really was being a jerk - he was asked to leave. She did say a couple of NASA parents sitting nearby said 'way to go ref!' when obnoxious Rush daddy was leaving.
I will say that the Rush players all ran over to shake the referees hands at the end of the game - the NASA kids never did - which surprised me because I've always seen NASA teams do this however, when I was watching the game, the NASA coach was really yelling at his boys so he may have kept them under the tent to chew them out some more. The 10 minutes or so that I watched, Rush dominated that game - great passing and ball movement. The NASA goalie gave everyone a scare - he dove for a ball that hit the post and I think his head grazed it as well - he stayed down for a bit but came up. I was also impressed that the Rush player who made the shot ran over to shake the goalie's hand once he got up. The little bit of the game I saw, all the boys on the field were playing well and very clean - no blatantly dirty fouls despite what I heard a few parents yelling. Seriously people - just shut up on the sidelines already. For the most part, these kids will play their game the way they are taught and the right way - just watch and appreciate that.
I'll go and watch the last half of her last game today - it's too hot to hang out and frankly she is fine without me. I'm glad she handled the obnoxious dad that way - she followed the rules and kept her cool (well as cool as one can keep in 100 degree heat!) Four games today - four tomorrow - girlfriend is earning her keep lately! Next weekend we kick it off out of state at a tournament - I'm ready to watch her play not ref!
But for any of y'all in tournaments today - let cars get out of the lot and don't yell at the players or the referees! Especially if you're at NASA and have a cute 14 year old ponytailed girl as your AR!
