Had a kid play at RYSA. Level of competition was pretty good. We are talking about teams in bracket all in top 30 in state. I though fields were decent. Grass was in good shape as it should be this time of year. Officiating was good for our games. Parents were not outrageous. Traffic flow and parking I thought were both pretty logical at main complex and at Covington. No complaints.

I've always thought the RYSA complex was very well maintained and run. Yes, parking can be a pain but it can be at every other large venue during a tournament, too. My daughters teams stopped going to RYSA tournaments after U12 though, the level of competition for older teams doesn't seem to be there but for younger Academy, RYSA is a fine tournament.

I was there for u13 and u16 Athena girls. Competition was fair, fields were great at North Mt Carmel especially after the monsoon Saturday night. The issue was refs, 2 out of 3 were either young, inexperienced, or just in it for the paycheck. Rafe did a great job trying to stay on top of things from RYSA but I think they were not expecting to have such a turnout that it overwhelmed them at first. Overall it was a good soccer weekend outside of the heat and rain. Anyone know how Tophat went? That's typically were we go but decided to change since their fields are never consistent.

I know some people had complaints about field assignments. MT. Carmel and RYSA are far apart if you don't live in either of those areas. I think there are closer options for fields for them, although I know Mt. Carmel is nice.

The issue was refs, 2 out of 3 were either young, inexperienced, or just in it for the paycheck. Rafe did a great job trying to stay on top of things from RYSA but I think they were not expecting to have such a turnout that it overwhelmed them at first. Regarding referees - multi faceted problem: 1 - too many tournaments in metro Atlanta on the same weekends. This weekend was NASA Boys, RYSA and Top Hat. All three are pretty well attended tournaments meaning lots of games meaning lots of need for referrees. the assignor at NASA was asking for refs as late as Friday night. A few weeks ago the Concorde assignor was sending out emails Saturday morning calling for more referees. This weekend, Atlanta Cup is clammoring for them - but so many of the younger R9's who can be AR's have our own Labor Day tournaments to play in so they can't ref this weekend. 2 - extreme shortage of experienced referees. By 'experienced' I mean adults with R8 certification and above - the pool is just not that deep. Leaving you with younger referees - like my kid - who are R9s. And they can only ref as AR's or centers for the very young age groups and too many of them are opting never to center because they're being berated by parents about their lack of experience. A young man my daughter AR'd with yesterday said he'd never go in the center again. Apparently a father of a U9 boy walked up to him after the game he center reffed for the very first time and told him he was a disgrace. U9! Seriously? A NASA coach yelled at my daughter, the center and other AR yesterday telling them they didn't deserve their paychecks. I have personally witnessed parents harassing an AR for a missed offside call and screaming at a youngish center for every inkling of a foul or handball. If you want better referees - you can do two things: 1 - become one yourself or have your kid take the classes 2 - STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT THE REFEREES! Especially during or after a game. Trust me - they know way more than you think you do. They are human - they will miss a push or a handball every now and then but for the most part, they will call the game. Younger refs are monitored and coached. The assignor at NASA will not put a new referee out in center unless the ref says he or she is ready. But there is a shortage - and you parents want a ref there so sometimes you have to take what you're given - unless you opt for number one above in the two things you can do to make this better! Trust me - being 'in it for the paycheck' is not the reason they're out there. It's a thankless, hard job - especially when the parents start acting like idiots and criticizing them. FYI - I'm not coming down on you personally - just letting the general audience here know that there is a shortage of refs - don't scare them off!

RYSA was perfect for my team, but then, we are Classic IV. Something that forumites (especially in the other place) seem to forget - not every team is a top level team. The lower level teams like to play in tournaments too!
In the lower division we had two wins (1-0, 2-0) and one loss (0-1). I would say the competition was just what I needed, especially since I have a lot of new players on the squad. If I had anything to complain about it would be that all three of my games were at different complexes.
Didn't have problems with the referees. Had one AR who wasn't up with it at times but didn't hurt us in the end. I even had enough time between games to referee a game myself, just to help out. The cash from refereeing did pay for lunch and a t-shirt for my guest player.
